IT doesn't bother me in the original film in that she is in prison and they are trying to get rid of her defining characteristic(s) and make her into a plain jane....
I firmly support the decission in the musical to not change her style and wish it would be constant in teh film as well. It is very symbollic. Tracy doesn't change.. everyone else does... they are all brought around to seeing things Tracy's way.... her hair, and in this show, hair is a MEGA deal, stays the same, and everyone else changes in the finale. They considered giving Tracy an outlandish do in the stage finale, but opted against it because it is MUCH more impactful for everyone to change, but not Tracy.
No, the bow doesn't change during 60s. You THINK it does because it well designed! Brava William Ivey Long. He won that Tony for a reason.
I get ya.
Who knows what we'll see in this new movie. Film opens up so many possibilities.
Yes, WIL is incredible. I love the MJW behind the scenes video where she is all "He gave me 4 white shirts, I have 4 white shirts! You probably don't notice it but I change my shirt 4 times, for no reason!" hahaha

some of us however, can tell when they alter the fabric used in those 4 white shirts or when some Tracy's get new butt padding!
yeh. tis noticeable.

as minor as it is, I like the texture of the fabric used in michelle dowdy's white blouse when she gets onto the show/pre-"welcome to the 60s", but the fact that the cording is a very pale blue instead of the vibrant darker shade bugs me.
Are the costumes made for these actresses kept in case they return or are they just given to other performers and altered accordingly?

depends on the situation pretty much...
one example- on tour, lou ann wore a very attractive baby blue dress with white bows and other detailing (my favorite costume for that character). on broadway, it is baby blue and covered in daisies. leslie mcdonel started as lou ann on tour, but when she joied the broadway company, they put her in the broadway costume.
example two - when cameron adams, who played brenda, left the show, the dress was aletred to fit the VERY tiny leslie goddard.. when leslie was out of the show for a while, cameron was brought back and since the dress no longer fit her frame, they shoe horned her into the hideous mint green monstosity that was tested on katharine leonard (of the broadway company) and was resurrected as the ORIGINAL lou ann dress on the tour.

You know so much about this.
I dont think I have seen the mint green lou ann dress.

thank you.
believe me, you aren't missing much..... you can find that mint green dress, i believe, in the picture section on austin miller's website....
oh that one!
oh yeh, yuck.

yep. that's the one! If it was too ugly the first time, why bring it back for the tour? if it was too ugly for the tour.. the second time.. why wasn't it BURNED?
The youngster known as BroadwayGuy2 says "it doesn't bother me in the original film in that she is in prison and they are trying to get rid of her defining characteristic(s) and make her into a plain jane.... "
Um, sorry to burst your know-it-all bubble young man, but they aren't doing that at all, just the opposite. They are not making her into a “plain jane”, they are encouraging her to cut loose from conformity and to move forward in the times (and, ironically, embrace a NEW “conformity”) by embracing the severely straight hair that people like Cher were suddenly making popular, instantaneously making the bouffant passé. Oh my, yes, Tracy Turnblad changes…her hair! Not her spirit, but yes, her hair, cause our girl is always on the cutting edge of fashion!
And for the record, I think that EW photo is a-DOR-able and if I were a young fan of HAIRSPRAY (like the level headed and fantastic entity known as "mateo") I would be bursting at the seams with joy.
I am also amazed at how much the "BroadwayGuy2" entity can deduce from a single photo! Not since Miss Cleo has the world seen such clairvoyant talent! Bravo!

i think the picture looks great! i love the outfits for Edna and Tracy!
and could Nicole be ANY cuter? i think not!
she, as well as everyone else, will be fantastic
this movie is shaping up to look really great!
i love how realistic it is
:)
Maybe I'm just dumb but I always thought that in the original movie, Tracy and Penny both iron their hair because they meet Pia Zadora (the beatnik chick) and she tells them that their hair is "totally uncool".
I didnt think it was society telling her to conform, etc. But then again I could have missed something...
she gets it straightened in reform school/prison/women's detention
and yes, the beatnik chick (pia Z) is another sign towards the changing fashion that the ever in the moment Tracy surely takes note of!
once again, the point is Tracy Turnbald could actually change her hair style for either a moment or for a reason without anyone needing to get their panties (in the case of this pic of Travolta/Edna, visible panties!) in a twist!
Not there's anything wrong with panties or the twist!
I am super excited about this. It seems like everything is falling into place! I wish I was lucky enough to be on the set. It looks like a blast.
Minorly off-subject, but when I saw the clip on Entertainment Tonight, it seemed that Mr Travolta was using a very accurate "Bawlmer" accent. I laughed out loud. Being from Baltimore, I LOVE that in this film Miss Turnblad will be a true Baltimore "Hon".
Great pictures! They all look adorable.
I think Niki in a cool way looks like Ricki Lake in that picture. John looks like someone digital pasted his head on someone else's body.
***Funny stuff...I had a dream last night that I got an advance copy of the movie soundtrack, and the voice that John used was almost the exact same as to Harvey's. But in the recording I could tell it was the movie, cause a lot of things were different. Funny to have a dream like that.
LuvUrBatBoy- I am glad that the accent is so accurate. At first I was like "what is that!?" but then I read up on it- and totally understand why he is using it.
:) oh Marc. Trust me... I got stares in the market when I gasped -rather loudly- at the EW mag photo.
and since it was friday the 13th people were on edge. oops. :)

marc, i was giving MY take on what *I* took from the hair straitening moment...
Thank you Marc! Many of us...are very thrilled and GLAD that we get to see anything at all! I'm confident that this is going to be a great film.
Also, unless they changed something, Tracy's hairbow IS changed during "60's". I stood right thereas it happened MANY times.

diva, I don't notice it changing in the broadway company... believe me i look... that bow was cut a while back. I know what you speak off.... Tracy had a bow that matched the dress... it is PLAINLY visible in any of the Hi-Res production photos that I have of the tour and early broadway cast..... sadly, when Tracy emerges from the Hefty Hideaway now, she sports that stunning gown topped of by the plaid bow that she has for the majority of the show....

I totally agree that Tracy can change her hair without changing who she is but I also think it says something that the broadway show uses a simple graphic of mostly her hair as their iconic image. Ive also never thought that Tracy's hairdo was exactly in-style, but more her interpretation of what was in. Amber does have that 'what is THAT?' response when Shelly has the same hairstyle for the gym scene and even earlier than that Seaweed tells her maybe shes trying too hard to fit in. I dont think Tracy has to keep the same style necessarily but I always felt she took her hair very seriously so I hope its addressed similarly in the movie.
I do think its adorable that Edna ends up with the Tracy 'do.
