I read on PLAYBILL.com this evening that Michael Cerveris will be doing a reading of 'The Goree Girls' on December 17th. Of course I have tickets to FUN HOME that night and I am freaking out. The idea of seeing Cerveris' understudy, plus the new Sydney Lucas, plus Skeggs... Oof. Why bother???
I called Telecharge tonight to explain that the Tony-winning star might be out... Their response: Sydney Lucas left forever ago. Are you kidding me?? She did not win the Tony!!
Sorry to post so frantically but please help... Does anyone know if Cerveris will be in Thursday's show??

There is no "new Sydney Lucas." There is a new Small Alison, played by the more-than-capable Gabriella Pizzolo. And Jim Stanek is a wonderful Bruce. And LOL that you were so upset and didn't know she didn't win?
However, if you're still dismayed by the nature of live theatre and how casts can't be guaranteed, I'll take your ticket for free since I thought Jim was great.

Jim was fabulous - as was Gabby. A freak out is not necessary...The show was completely moving with both of them, and I have seen all four in question at different times as well.
I somehow don't think our words are much assurance.
No. Stop. There isn't a new Sydney Lucus. There is a new girl playing Small Allison and she is the amazingly talented Gabby Pizzolo. Gabby completely makes the role of Small Allison her own and freaking kills it at every performance. It is so rude to completely disregard her just because she is a replacement. This is a role for a child they can't stay forever.
Here watch Gabby sing Ring of Keys and maybe you'll understand what a privilege it is to be able to see her live.

I know everyone else pretty much said everything, but gabby is seriously an amazing small Allison. She was also amazing as Matilda. Just please don't automatically think she is bad just because she isn't Sydney Lucas. You can be mad that you won't get to see her, but don't say that gabby is bad because of that. And also Jim is very good, so again just because he isn't Michael doesn't mean he isn't good. Just remember that these actors aren't supposed to be Michael or Sydney. They all make it their own and you'll most likely still enjoy the show A LOT. I understand you have an opinion and you were set on seeing certain people but please don't come on a public place and pretty much say that replacements aren't as good the originals.

Skimbleshanks. Dude. Find your chill.
Skimbleshanks2, you honestly should be embarrassed to be wanting to switch performance just because Michael won't be there and Sydney Lucas is no longer there, btw its been like 2 months since she left. Honestly Gabby and Jim are amazing and I hope Jim replaces Michael in the future.

Well who IS the new Sydney.
The new Alexandra Socha is GREAT and I loved Alexandra Socha.
Also, most industry readings happen during business hours. So it is likely Cerveris will be in the show that night
I know that Sydney left the production and that she didn't win the Tony. My point was that the Telecharge guy didn't know and tried to dismiss me. Bye Felicia.
Anyway... Thanks for answering my question, Mr. Musical. Sorry for the freak-out but I love Michael Cerveris!!

It's silly how much hate has been spewed in this thread because an audience member wants to see a Tony Award-winning actor in the role they won their Tony. Yes, Jim is great. He's not Tony great, and I can understand the disappointment when someone is unexpectedly out. Unfortunately, that's how theatre works.
Gabby is great, but she's not at Lucas' level in this role. That's more a testament to how long Sydney was in the role and developing her performance. I'm sure Gabby will get there; she was already getting close when I saw her a month or so back.

Well, in their defense, Lucas has nothing to do with the production at this point, so even if they are able to exchange tickets for a different date, it would have nothing to do with her and everything to do with Cerveris. Having a clearer point about needing an exchange because you want to see Cerveris is always more helpful than piling on that you also can't see someone who left the show months ago... that only weakens your case and makes it sounds like you just want a refund.
That's not what I meant. I didn't bring up Sydney Lucas on the phone; I don't care about seeing her. I said I was upset that the Tony-winning star of Fun Home might be out that night, meaning Cerveris. They said "Sydney Lucas left months ago." And I was like "Um, she didn't win the Tony. I don't care. I meant Michael Cerveris..."
1. Well, you certainly cared about it in your original post....so if your phone conversation went anything like that post, I can understand the person's confusion. (And why throw shade at Skeggs? She's been with the production since The Public.
2. Do you really think that ticket reps know or CARE about the Tony results of every/any show?
3. What did you expect them to do on a "maybe" he won't be there. If they hadn't been contacted about his absence, there is NOTHING they would be able to do. They can't magically know everything.
I saw the original cast. Everyone was good except Skeggs... Sorry...
I mean, given how good certain shows are about posting planned absences (Kelli O'Hara; Audra; etc.) I was hoping that they might know the same for FUN HOME.... I got transfered to a nicer customer service agent who did consult the Broadway Bible after all...
Prayers. Answered.
THANK YOU to whoever wrote this kind and thoughtful article... YASSSSS CERVERIS!!
Skimbles just came in the door...
Well, it's a repurposed press release, so I'm not sure who there is to thank...

Oh, OK, so you gave them a nine syllable clue to figure out instead of just saying his name. Got it.
LOL... You guys really hate me, I know... But secretly love me ![]()
