She was rude to fans at the stage door because she didn't know how to handle them. Fans would charge her in the streets or show up in front of her apartment building and this overflow of followers scared her, the only way she could handle it was by not acknowledging them.

I remember that years ago, no decades ago, I heard Lainie Kazan tell this story on a talk show (Merv Griffin?):

She found out she was finally going on for Barbra and had a music run-through with either the conductor or the conductor with the band (can't remember) when he interrupted her at one point and said "No, no, no. Barbra does it like this." [he demonstrated]

She stared at him and said, "I'm not Barbra."
