Common spelling error:
Kristen Chenoweth...I see this too much. It's Kristin, with an I, not an E.

Posted: 11/8/03 at 11:21pmI hate "theatre." While it is not incorrect, I still dislike it just because it is pronounced theatER.

Theatre vs theater: I've heard the difference is that one is the building and one is the artform.
This is why I refer to stage work as theatre and when I go to the movies--I watch them in a theater.
Most theatre people spell the stage form "re". =)

People, it is SUELEEN and not SUELLEN. I believe Suellen was one of the Walton sisters. I have no conection with that clan. Except for the fact that I have a huge "Beauty Mark" on my cheek!
Long live the "Theata".

I hate it when 'theatre' is spelt as 'theater'. When you go to the movies you go to the cinema, not a theatre. The word 'color' should be spelt 'colour', and the word 'neighbor' should be spelt 'neighbour', 'center' should be spelt 'centre' and so forth.
This is the correct spelling of these words in the English language. My guess is that someone in the U.S. education system many years ago decided to put an American stamp on these words so that they would be spelt in a way that they
would be represented phonetically.

Suleen, I'm late to this party ... but are you named after the tone-deaf reluctant stripper in Nashville?? Who memorably sang "you're the WUH-uh-UN!"?
Makes my heart sing. I vow to spell it write.

I am bothered by posters who confuse the spelling of "there" with "their" and "they're."
Also with those who confuse "to" with "too" and "two."
Then there are those who confuse "your" with "you're."

Posted: 11/9/03 at 10:01amWait a minute... how was I not the originator of this thread? Hmm? How about the many times that for some reason THE is spelled TEH? "Definitely" is the most mispelled word here. I love you Papa.
#39re: re: GENERAL SPELLING ANNOUNCEMENT
Posted: 11/9/03 at 10:02amAdd to that the confusing of "were" and "we're."

Noah Webster is the guy mainly responsible for Americanizing spelling in the US. He used American spellings like "color" instead of the English "colour" and "music" instead " of "musick". He also added American words that weren't in English dictionaries like "skunk" and "squash" He finished the dictionary in 1828, and Americans still tend to refer to the source they go to for spelling and definitions as "Webster's dictionary" although he's long dead and dictionaries have changed a lot.

I have to get this off my chest:
her name is IDINA MENZEL, not Edina, Idena, or any other variation. Thank you! =d

Posted: 11/9/03 at 2:58pmMay I add to that that her name is pronounced ah-dee-nuh, not I-dee-nuh or IN-dee-nuh or any other crazy pronunciations people come up with.

the dictionary that noah published does continue on to this day to be published and bear his name abeit with the publisher "merriam" conjoined to it and taking top billing complete with updates and changes even to the point that "dictionary.com" and "websters.com" take the next generation of webster-philes to the same place. safe to say his place in history is secure.

Kewl...okay. First, if you're saying the word "cool" "kewl" we need to work on some basic phonetic principles. Other pet peeves include similarly childish abbreviations: 4, 2, u, Thanx (is it really so hard to type one extra letter to say the appropriate "Thanks?"), sux (I hate the word anyways, but the this abbreviation drives me up the wall), luv..I think you all see where I'm going with this. Also, all those other convenient computer abbreviations - OMG, IMHO, TTYL, BRB. Can't we take a couple extra seconds to actually write out the words? Forgetting to use apostrophes also frustrates me.
Well, now that I've properly vented about this I guess I can forgo my daily xanax.

Posted: 11/9/03 at 6:48pmI have never seen this here on BWworld.com but was reminded of it this afternoon when I heard someone at the movies say it. So many people misspell the word CONVERSATE. Please note the correct spelling. When one is speaking of having a dialouge with another person the word is spelled conversate.
#48re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: general spelling announcement
Posted: 11/9/03 at 6:59pmOk, the word "conversate" does NOT, I repeat, does NOT exist in the english language. It is a made up word, much like "AX" or "aint". The word is CONVERSE!

I also hate when people confuse "use" and "yous"
Please ermeber that "use" referes to employing something and "yous" is when you addressing more than one person.
