i think maybe some people are thinking that the Beach boy songs are classics (which of course they are) and that they sound a certain way and that that is the only way that they can ever be sung, because any other way would be a distortion of the way its supposed to be, and that in G.V they are just covering the classics straight out, trying to sound like the beach boys, and then just sticking those songs in between some dancing and dialogue. And I agree that that would be uncreative, and boring, and they could never be the beach boys and shouldnt try to copy them, but the thing that I found interesting and enjoyable and fresh and updated is that we get to hear the songs that we recognize as special and unique, but they are not weak copies of Beachboys songs. We get to hear the songs sung by different voices,(females, females and males, variations of males) with different expressiveness and personality imbued in them and it is creative and enjoyable. We know the Beach Boys were all guys and they had their sound. But what if Caroline and Marcella do an echo kind of duet, sitting quietly at the edge of the stage in a version of My Imagination where you get to hear Carolines very sweet really high clear voice combined with Marcellas lower one . Thats not how the Beach Boys did it but its lovely, interesting and enjoyable to hear.
Weve got Justins singing Caroline with flirtatious sexiness in his voice. Again different. Youve got three part male harmony in I wasnt made for these time, again, different but poignantly sung.
And on Sail on Sailor you get Eddie, who is black and can really wail, singing opposite another guy, in what almost sounds like a gospel duel type rendition of that song.
They really let loose in that one, and again, its the Beach Boys but its different enough to be interesting and not a pale copy of the classic.
They even modern dance part of Surfin U.S.A to african drumbeats. The cast really put a lot of energy into the whole show and while I can see some might wonder how it could be creative and fun and enjoyable, it really was.

for me, it's not that the songs are untouchable classics. they're some great songs but I mostly just don't feel the need for another version. it's not the type of music where different actors are going to put their mark on it by bringing out different meanings in the songs. it's just fun music of a very specific style. if i want to see it performed live, I can find a Beach Boys cover band.

But they DO bring out variations and put their marks on the songs. I know . I saw the show 4 times!

Yes, but what's the purpose of this show? Artistically?

Movin' Out is a dance show, and a good one, that happens to use Billy Joel music in the background. Mamma Mia!, on the other hand, is an all-out jukebox musical, and like I said before, the only purpose behind it that I can discern is, "Let's have a snazzy ABBA revue with a sort-of plot! Yay!" It's the same with The Boy From Oz, but at least that show had the sense to hire an excellent, mostly veteran cast and stick Hugh Jackman in the middle of it all.

What is Good Vibrations' reason for being? I'm not asking for anything deep here, but what does it bring to the table that I won't get from listening to my Beach Boys CDs for much less money? Covers of Beach Boys songs? Not good enough. I need a reason to see the show, and so far I'm not getting one.

But to each their own. There's obviously no way I'm going to dissuade you from watching that show. But when I go to the theater, I want to see theater. And maybe that's why it galls me a little to see Good Vibrations moving into the space that recently housed one of the lovliest and most original pieces of true theater I've ever seen- Caroline, or Change.

plum.. i can respect yours and anyone preferences, but knowone will twist your arm to go see this show! so i'm not quite sure why u even care to post about it if u have no interest in it!

just cause u or some people might not like these types of shows does not mean they are not good! the people at Vassar that sold out shows each night all seemed to have a great time at only a workshop!

so i guess i'm lost as to why this discussion is an endless one!

I think and hope the People from Vassar start to post on this thread they saw the show and liked it and some people on this board have friends and family members that might be in this show!

Matt Broadway, your ICON scares me a bit omg! lol... I have run out of words! lol

this is just silly so don't see the show and we won't hold it against you! lol!

many people really enjoyed the workshop and all the beach boy songs and i think it sounds great!

No one is right or wrong, if people like the show it will sell out like it did in Vassar...so nothing we all say can really change anything, see it or not see it whatever fits ur fancy! lol

Plum, you hit the nail on the head. it's hard to pinpoint what it is about GV that just doesn't fit together like with the other shows you mentioned. even Boy From Oz, which remains the only Broadway show I've ever left at inermission, was justifiably successful because it knew where its strengths and faults were and how they fit into the overall goal of the piece. in that case the goal was to showcase some great songs and give every woman and gay man in the audience something to put in the christmas newsletter. from what I can surmise from not having seen GOOD VIBRATIONS, it just doesn't seem to have enough of a grasp on this for it to appeal to a wide audience.

Jgssf, please don't take any of these critiques to imply that i want you to change your opinion on the show. hell you've seen it and you liked it and that's really all that matters. the rest of us will make whatever judgments we can with what info we have. we may be wrong in the end, but for me this is a fun part of the process, like debating over which sports team will win before the season starts. mixing acquired evidence with lessons from the past with our personal biases and allegiances, then gloating when Avenue Q beats Wicked for the Tony! it's nothing personal and no reflection of a person's intelligence or good taste. you like GV for your reasons and there's no need to justify your reasons for liking it. but then this IS a discussion board so people like to hear different sides, so long as we all stay civil instead of getting all butt-soar like in a lot of threads recently.

but this thread has actually been pretty civil. long-winded yes but not too abusive. eh, such is life.

real quick, to JJSugar--

same deal, if you like the show, be proud of it and explain why. more power to you. but you can't ask others not to form opinions and share them here, even if the opinions are premature. i personally use it to decide whether i care enough to sink $100 on it or if I should use it on something I know I'll like. I don't have a personal vendetta against a particular kind of show. the format is just another factor in trying to figure out what it might be able to offer as a whole production.

I certainly hope no one involved in that or any other show who reads about themselves on BWW gets too offended or hurt. I keep this in mind and am careful not to post anything personally insulting about a college or youth production I've watched. My attitude toward all other theatre is that adults know what they're getting into and should be able to handle criticism from some a**hole on a message board. if they disagree or take offense, let them say so.

just trying to put all this to bed before it resorts to name-calling and poop jokes. i applaud your persistence jjsugar and also your ability to keep a light attitude about the whole thing. drama people have a tendency to create drama where it's not necessary, but we can't forget THESE ARE ALL OPINIONS!

if we take everything seriously, we'll eventually all resemble Mr. D'Arcy James in my icon photo!

ur icon still scares me some who is that guy anyway? lol..haha!

yes u all can have ur opinions i just felt like i was on ground hog day and we are starting to repeat ourselves again and again! hahaha! i'm running out of words and that never happens! LOL..hahaha!

i do enjoy this board at Broadway and soo far know one is posting anything nasty or name calling so i have no problem having some fun chatting with everyone and i try to have a good time if possible!

i've only had one bad experience on any board and most boards are ok and people to try to not stoop down to name calling! so it's all cool here just opinions!

I do have one small suggestion!

in the past i have thought something would not be my cup of tea and went along with a friend maybe to go see something a movie or a show? and their are those rare situations that something u think would not be what u would like ends up being something u enjoyed! Not to say that is the case with GV...but just in general in life be Open in some cases so u don't eliminate surprises that are good in your life!

example: u might not normally want to date someone with Blonde or brown hair? or someone that is into sports? but sometimes u give that person a chance and u find out that u enjoy something u never thougth u would like sports or whatever activities they are involved in!

i said i would never date up tight guy in a suit, but not all guys in suits are up tight only some of them! LOL...haha!

Not to say you would like GV, but it is hard to say u may not! but in general don't forget to leave room for those rare times u get suprised that is the spice of life in a way!

I went to London a few years ago for work and I went to some show i thought it might be just funny but not too seriously good! It was a show about ElVIS and this silly show i thought would be a filler of time on our trip ended up being such a wonderful show about Elvis life and they had real live Elvis impersonators and then Pictures on stage a big screen about his life and we were all crying at the end when he died and i finally got a real understanding about how Big Elvis was and how he touched people's hearts with his music and voice! this silly show made me really appreciate the King of rock more!

their were all these Elvis wannabees in the audiences dressed as Elvis it was soo funny and after the show i had my picture taken with some People dressed like elvis and i was in an Elvis sandwich, i had soo much fun with my friends that night and we went some London pubs later we could not stop laughing we had soo much fun at that Elvis show! haha! i never expected that and so it was a nice memory of London for me who would think London would have a show about Elvis maybe in the U.S.A, but London so it was funny! LOL

hahaha...

here is one more example of the spice of life!

when i first saw Justin Guarini on that new show called american idol? hehe! i saw this KID with Big hair and said he looks like my Neice Heather! she has curly hair very cute she is adorable! Then Justin Opened his MOUTH and Sang 'Ribbon in the Sky' and omg i was in shock how can this KID he looks soo funny with that Hair have a voice like some Legend!

Then i heard Justin sing 'Get Here' and a few other old school stevie wonder classics 'for once in my life' and my god he had the voice of a throw back like Nat king cole and Bing crosby and Frank sinatra and the Amazing thing is he had his own stlye and not a Frank impersonator as most Crooners try to be!

for people that missed Justin Guarini on Ai-1 in the beginning it was like finding Gold for the first time EUREKA! LOL!

many people i knew on Idol boards and in life only saw Justin and his Big Hair and thought he is just some KID! I thought the same thing at first! But when people hear his CD that i have and recommend of Justin's they sure come back with their tail between their legs and thank ME JJsugar for sharing Justin's cd with them they Love him now!

My Brother and Brother in law use to make fun of Justin cause his hair! uno how guys are! But once they heard Justin's cd in our stereo at home they said "OH that is JUSTIN"?? oh wow sounds great that really is Justin? i said yes, then they are shocked and say he is really good! My Brother inlaw had to go out and Buy Justin's cd the next day my sister wanted it and he liked it! now these people use to make fun of justin and i just said to them "JJsugar is never wrong especially when it comes to Justin's cd" if it sucked i would not listen to it myself and i have great taste in music and an ear for music i can play the piano by ear!

I have sold many justin's cd on idol boards and people say thanks for pushing me to get it! I have NOT had one unhappy customer yet and my record is better then the MATAG REpair man! LOL...hahahaha

The minute someone say's to me they don't like it they will win a free cd from me cause i no i won't have to ever pay for it! LOL>...

even though Justin's CD was never distributed much at all and the best place to only get it is Amazon.com i still suggest to people i no and talk to to get it for pure enjoyment and it has nothing to do with SAles the cd is shelved so it is only for people to enjoy since it is still on amazon! Tower records does not have justin's cd anymore and i don't think any stores carry it justin sold most all the copies they made about 140,000 cd's he can't sell more then that RCA never printed anymore then that! he sold them all and they never made or distributed more then that if they did he would have sold more it is a very good cd and enjoyable at Parties also!

so why am i trying to sell Justin's cd to anyone since he left RCA? because i love to find out about new talent and a good Cd and even though this CD is about retired and only a few copies left it is worth owning and i still enjoy it and don't no one person that has heard it Not just be shocked and say OMG that is Justin he is really good and get hooked!

i don't no Justin, nor never met him but this Kid has more talent then i ever seen and so i just try to help in any way i can he reminds me of my neices and newphews we have a big italian family i'm old enough to almost be his mom! lol... haha!

I consider finding Justin to be one of the spices of life! playing his cd has been a very uplifting thing for me and fun for our whole family now everyone in my family loves Justin's cd and they all got copies for Xmas last year! LOL...

i have to go warm up my coffee! ops!

I think Jgssf gave a good synopsis of the show and the reason it is different and appealing. I certainly want to see it and if I get to NY (if Justin is in the show) I certainly want to see Wicked, Mama Mia and The Lion King. I saw the Lion King when it was here and it was awesome. Those are the kind of shows that I want to see. I would never pay $100.00 do see something like Caroline or change no matter how good the singing is. My mother and grandmothers and aunts lived that life. Why would I pay to see it? Give me something fun! I've heard some of the music from the GV show at Vassar and it sounded like a lot of fun. To each his own.

I already tried that cup of tea. It was called The Boy From Oz. Now admittedly, the Beach Boys made better music than Peter Allen in their sleep, but the cast of Good Vibrations is...who? I liked Kate Rienders in Gypsy, but her part was tiny. We have yet to see if she can be a lead. And I've never heard of the male lead in any capacity. And Guarini is supposed to be quite good, but he's just in a supporting role. The Boy From Oz had some fine veterans in Beth Fowler and Jarrod Emick and a superstar carrying the show on his back. That's what made up for the laughable book. I can't imagine that happening here.

Hey, maybe I'll try the jukebox musical thing again. But unless reviews really surprise me (and I mean the reviews of posters I respect as well as professional reviews), Good Vibrations won't be on my list of shows to see. *shrug* I did get a ticket to Pacific Overtures today, though. I guess I'll take my tea green.

And kandikane, if you avoided Caroline because it was about a maid, I'm sorry. My family background isn't exactly the most prosperous, but I adored the show. The show is about the sacrifices parents make for their children, but also about how those children are the hope for the future. It's not a total downer. But as you say, to each their own. I doubt I'll change your mind.

It's funny how reading other people's opinions can influence you. I read so many reviews that said Caroline was depressing so it made me not want to see it. And now so many people don't want to see Good Vibrations because other people say it is not going to be good even though people that actually saw it liked it. I guess it will be up to the critics then. I'll be honest with you the only reason I want to see it is if Justin is in it. I'm more of an R&B fan than a Beach Boy fan but the songs I have heard performed by the cast of GV sounded quite good, not so Beach Boyish as someone else said, so no matter what the critics say, if Justin is in it I will be there.

the reviews i saw on the workshop of GV at Vassar were all pretty great actually and they were from the audience members and some Justin fans and many not knowing who justin was until that weekend! all the reviews seemed very good and the common comments were how fun the show was and so i really think it will get even better reviews once the show is on broadway it was only a workshop and it got very good reviews from the audience so my guess this will do well!

but we all like different things so i do love the beach boys way more then Abba and Bill Joel so for me the Beach boys music and renditions to be done in the show will be a real highlight and it would be really great if Justin is in the show too!

when in the heck will they announce the entire cast? geez these people take forever ! LOL...

Just my own opinion here, not trying to change anyone's mind. I saw Good Vibrations five times at Vassar. I admit I love Justin Guarini's voice and wanted to see if he could act and dance. Spending the weekend going to the play with friends from the east coast, I went into it not knowing what to expect. I was not expecting much but covers of Beach Boy songs and the chance to see Justin in a musical production.

The fact that there was not a big time "star" did not hurt the production at all. I was fascinated to see that the story was about high school kids from the east coast who travel to California. It would not have fit the story to have a big time Broadway star in the lead. They are supposed to be high school seniors, fresh faced and going off to explore California before they venture out into the world. I learned to love the emotion and different way the songs were interpreted (African beat, gospel, etc.) and was impressed with the fact that it took me not only back to the songs of my youth but the trials and tribulations of being a teenager. The writing was so well done because the songs were used to move the plot along and the dance for the most part blended into the plot. The dance numbers were very well done and ran the gamut from fifties, modern, to a Fred and Ginger number done by Justin and Caroline.

I could see this musical having a wide audience. It has something for all ages and makes you feel like dancing and singing as you leave the theater with a smile on your face. Believe me I can not get all that from putting an old Beach Boys CD on.

Forgive me if I do not use the correct Broadway venacular. This is the first time in quite a while that I have taken a direct interest in a Broadway play. I travel to London, and New York to see plays, but this is the first time I am excited and waiting in anticipation for an opening.

wow that is great Mjane u saw the show like 4 times! that was a nice review and i think from all the reviews i've read that this show is good and i think people seemed to have liked it! i didn't realize they did such a different renditions of the songs i think that sounds great!

so it sounds like Dawson's Creek on the beach in calif and with music! i liked Dawsons creek i sure miss that show it was very good and cute those kids!

well, BroadwayMatt u like ur new icon a bit better this dude is not as scary as the other guy was! lol..

Hi Plum. Yes it is true that the lead they picked for G.V is a kid two years out of college. He was competant, and they had him singing practically every song, but honestly he didnt have enough star quality for me. Personally i wouldve put Justin in the lead. He wouldve done a fantastic job and it wouldve been so great to be able to see what he could do with all those songs and singing. Some prefer Justin in the Jan part, and of course seeing a tan, toned, athletic, sexy Justin in the Jan part is fine with me too, but I sure hope they bring the kids to california faster and they give Justin more songs to sing and dance , because to tell you the truth when he makes his appearance he really brings the energy and excitement that takes the show from good to great and he is just fascinating to watch.
As for the lead kid. Well, the producers seem to have confidence in him, so maybe this will be one of those surprise broadway success stories. He comes practically right out of school, he winds up on broadway, surprises everyone and becomes a star.
Could happen.(or maybe theyll still give the part to Justin if they see the audience is really responding more to him) Which they do. Remember that saying, somthing like "you walk out on that stage a shlub and come back a star"? What was that from?
Well they have a "star" in Justin. I just hope they use him!

this is somewhat on topic i wnted to post this Project here since there are a few Justin fans around!

FYI: It's Justin Guarini's Birthday i understand on OCTOBER 28th ! He will be i think 26 years old! anyway, Last year many of Justins fan boards had a Birthday Project and bought his CD on Amazon.com on his Birthday! I also had posted that project on Idol boards and many Idol fans bought Justin's CD for his Birthday and they all loved his CD when they posted back to me later on!

Justin's Cd is very nice and it is still on Amazon.com i think, but hard to find elsewhere!

So last year we all got justin's cd on his Bday OCT 28th and he moved up in ranking on Amazon i think to like top 75 for that day! I hope Amazon has enough cd's since most All his Cd were sold that were made last year!

so OCT. 28th is the DAY, so you can participate if you want to or not ! if so maybe post it here to let me know if you were able to get Justin's cd try Amazon.com! Just cause Rca did not try to promote Justin's cd does not mean it was not good it is a very enjoyable cd and great for family or parties with friends or to play around the house or car! lol

Happy Birthday to Justin Guarini if he reads or finds this board sometime!

p.s.. not sure why, but Justin's cd is veryy good played during the holidays. he has a rich smooth voice sort of warm like bing crosby, and a bit jazzy style even, so Justin's cd is great to mix in your cd player at home etc..with holiday cd's it for some reason fits in well with the holidays but it is not a holiday cd, but has that warm feel to the music!

my fav. holiday song is bing crosby's 'white christmas' and now i love justin's song renditon of 'unchain melody' for xmas also it's like Bing singing it a very warm rendition that is just amazing and holidayish! lol... many other nice songs on there too by Brian Mcknight and Babyface on Justin's cd so it's a mix of Popish and R&B ish! lol..

i have not met one person yet, that heard it and did not really like it...

i was trying to keep things going til GV cast was announced but geez they seem to Not be announcing anything! what the heck!
does anyone here with Inside info. like some of you seen to have, know when those dudes/ or dudettes? producing this show will announce the CAST!

i'm out of things to talk about that never happens! lol...

i did see Brooke shields on the view yesterday and she talked about her play she is in and how she only had Two weeks to learn it! wow that is not much time and i don't no why these Broadway people only give a lead 2 weeks to learn a broadway show that is not really cool people pay soo much money to see a show and they learn this stuff in two weeks? they can't be ready for a show in two weeks! i felt bad for Brooke she seemed a bit nervous from it all and i'm sure rather had more time to learn it ! I saw Brooke when she was on suddenly susan i saw a taping of it on my birthday a few years back and she was good and i liked that show! I met the Hot spanish dude after the show and the cast was very nice i sat behind Kathy Griffens parents i did not no who she was at the time or them, but we talked they were soo proud of her and very nice people! she was funny i liked her a lot!

Tommy Smuthers was on it it was the episode with that guys that died his fake parents were Hippies! I saw him in person and he then died i think a year or soo later that was sad!

soo for off topic, but i ran out of things to say about GV and hope we do hear about the cast soon !

Broadway Matt: I have to agree with you. As a kid I grew up loving the Beach Boys music. As an adult I loved Billy Joel but frankly, I'd rather go to a concert and hear the artist sing the music.

Putting dance or a storyline to it to sell pop songs on Broadway seems artificial to me and I don't care for this form of Broadway at all. Especially at $100 a pop for a seat. I'm sure there will be an audience for it but I'd frankly rather see Brian Wilson try his hand at a Broadway score.
