Interestingly enough, this is the 2nd year in a row that the Tony winner for Best Score didn't receive a nomination in this (meaningless) category.

But isn't the award more about the record 'production' rather than the musical quality of the content? I feel as though it has nothing to do with the score.

Night Music?!? I loved the production, love the score, but that album sounds like it was recorded in a tin can!

I disagree about Night Music, gravity87. I would say it's impressive how great they made it sound with their slightly augmented orchestra on the recording as opposed to how tinny it can sound in the theater at times.

I'd say AMERICAN IDIOT has it in the bag, though the recording of PROMISES, PROMISES is wonderful.

NIGHT MUSIC and SONDHEIM are very nice, but nothing over-the-top stellar. NIGHT MUSIC features quite a bit of dialogue, and SONDHEIM has all those Sondheim interviews. I'd say that hurts them rather than helps them in a competition like this.

I find FELA! unlistenable, but that's just me.

I'm not surprised MEMPHIS and LA CAGE didn't make it. Neither sound too great. MEMPHIS is very hollow sounding, especially "Colored Woman." And LA CAGE has all those weird noises in the background that do nothing to help the recording itself.

This is a competition between the best recording- not the best score.

AMERICAN IDIOT is a lock. It's incredibly well-produced. Definitely the most polished of the nominees.
