Perhaps you shouldn't have waited to learn a new song two days before your audition.

First of all, one of my biggest pet peeves: it's "Grease!" not "Grease". Some shows just have an exclamation point. It's important. Like "Oklahoma!" or "Oliver!" The exclamation point is simply part of the title. I know the movie didn't use it, but that's the movie not the stage show. Don't forget the exclamation point. I apologize. Moving on...

Since you don't know anything from the show, I suggest you go with something you already know. Perhaps something you have sung before. Whether for an audition or a concert or whatever. Sing something you're familiar with. Unless they already asked you to sing something from the show it's never a good idea to sing a song for the show you're auditioning for. You could walk in and sing a song for a specific character and if they don't like it then they have it set in stone for you as that part and then may not even consider you for other characters. It's stupid, but it happens.

However, don't walk in and sing "Defying Gravity" or "Popular" or anything from WICKED. It's not a good idea. Why? Thirty other girls are doing the same thing. The director will shoot him/her self. Also don't go in and jump on the table singing "Out Tonight". I've seen it happen. Others have too. It's not pretty. If they asked you to sing a song from Grease! then you have some work to do, and not a lot of time to get it done. So hurry up.

But, stick with what you know. And try not to make a fool of yourself. You should be fine ... then I recommend picking up the original Broadway cast recording or the new-est Broadway cast recording with Brooke Sheilds. Both are great and will help you out if you do get cast.

Mr Tuttle- "Perhaps you shouldn't have..." is not a solution. Let's be in the business of solutions.

I can't know if the role is appropriate for your voice if I've never heard it, Lyte. And I don't know what version of GREASE! that your school is doing. I would recommend that you merely sing a song that you already know very well and enjoy singing. Whatever that means to you.

a GRAT piece of advice I was given when is tarted auditioning -- NEVER sing something from the show you are auditioning for unless you are asked to.

I didn't say everyone else was singing a song from Grease. I said people we're giving me advice telling that I should. I figured they didn't know enough and that's why I'm here.

Why does it matter that it's not in the version you're doing?

Lyte, honey, here's what u need to do...it's never good to do a song from the show are auditioning for, it corners you into one role, one which the director may not even be considering you for.

If you have your heart set on one role, ie Sandy, do a song that is done by a similar type character. For example, Sandy is a young, naive, "goody goody" ingenue type. Find some songs that fit that type

It's always better to do a song that you are comfortable with, shows your range and let the director do what he may.
