It would have been interesting to have seen the great Ellen Green as "Golde" in the current revival of "Fiddler..." It's unfortunate that Green doesn't perform more around NYC. She has a genuine 'star quality' in the old-school-tradition. I'd love to see her in a great musical role. Would also have been great to have seen Mandy Patinkin as "Tevye." Hummm...
Love,
Horsey!!!
Wonderful casting idea Col/Horsey, now that would of given the show an edge!
I love Ellen Greene!!! Yes, it is a pity she doesn't work as often as she should, she's a gem!
Mandy Patinkin as Tevye? Oh, LORD. I wouldn't be caught dead anywhere near the theatre. I can handle Mandy in many places --on Dead Like Me, for example. I think he's a FINE actor... but his singing makes me want to claw my own ears off.
I'm imagining "If I Were A Rich Man" two octaves too high. BLECH.
Kris I agree on the voice hardly being suitable for a Tevye.
I'd like to see Ellen Greene in a show most definitely.
I agree that Mandy Patinkin is not suited to the role of Tevye. But his voice is quite sensational on every recording I have of him (and I have ALL his recordings). And the night I saw his solo concert in London is still the most wonderful night I have ever spent in the theater.

God forbid Mandy Patinkin ever steps on a Broadway stage again, especially in a role that requires singing. He has a voice that sounds like several cats being mutilated with a powerdrill. Horrific. The only thing worse than his alleged "singing" is his humorless over-the-top "acting."
Patinkin as Tevye? Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Too many neuroses.
I think Mandy Patinkin is an amazing actor, and his singing is beautiful. If he ever acted "over-the-top" is was most likely due to the nature of the role (see The Princess Bride). As to his voice, it may not be the same as younger actor of our time, but it is pure in it's own right. He has a fantastic voice that has become a classic staple in the world of theatre. Perhaps he's not completely suited for this particular role, but I would pay a lot of money to see him return to the Broadway stage.

Those Two? Together!????
There would be more people popping Celexa and Ativan backstage than you could even begin to imagine.
Patinkin in Fiddler. I could see him slapping everyone in the village silly & then everyone putting him on the roof in a net as revenge for being such a ****
Mandy was in a weekly medical drama on cbs years back, I think it was Chicago Hope. Everyone in that cast was over the top, yuck.
Chicago Hope a/k/a ER Lite
