Make way, make way for the Sisters Clarke!

After a long developmental journey and two out-of-town tryouts, the new, original musical Wanted: The Legend of the Sisters Clarke finally arrives on Broadway tomorrow (October 15) before a November 8 opening night at the James Earl Jones Theatre. Solea Pfeiffer and Liisi LaFontaine play the titular subjects, with Ledisi as their mother; the principal cast also includes Luke James, Bradley Jaden, Aurelia Williams, and Awa Sal Secka. With a score by Ross Baum and Angelica Chéri (a direct descendant of Mary and Martha Clarke) and a book by Chéri, Wanted is choreographed by Chelsey Arce and directed by Stevie Walker-Webb.

“Texas, 1893. Twin sisters Mary and Martha Clarke are on the run. As Black women who pass for white and hide in plain sight, they straddle a dangerous line between two Americas. When powerful forces close in to keep their family from claiming a future of their own, Mary and Martha are driven to desperate measures to save their mother and their family’s legacy. Forced to do the unthinkable, the sisters fight for self-determination, dignity, and an inheritance long denied. Through it all, the Kinfolk — a vibrant chorus of ancestors — guide them forward on an odyssey of sisterhood, rebellion, and freedom.”

Who’s riding into those wide-open plains?

The website lists a 2:15 runtime including intermission, which is subject to change as the show develops.

Conducting will be Paul Byssainthe Jr., who recently worked on the RAGTIME and THE WIZ revivals. Orchestrations are by John Clancy.

Does anyone have an orchestra breakdown for me? I can't find anything online yet.

The marketing for this is so incredibly dull.

Hence why it's not selling.

Every season we have a show or two so horrendously marketed and branded it just screams flop from the second it's announced. It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion. This and Galileo.

I think the Galileo key art is beautiful but yes, I get your point. Chess always felt floppy to me because of their mediocre art/branding.

I don’t hate it, I just don’t think it will sell a single ticket. At least it looks professional.

As someone who has attended a lot of first previews, that will go down as one of the strongest I have ever attended. Not only does it have an incredible book and score by Cheri and Baum but dare I say some of the best vocals you will hear currently on a Broadway stage. If both Solea & Liisi do not get Tony nominations I simply give up

also Stevie Walker-Webb the director came out and gave a beautiful preshow speech

That speech was the equivalent of a yoga instructor talking down to a group of children (the audience) about what a first preview is.

returning towards opening. this is VERY long long right now running at 3 hours with intermission. They have a lot of cuts and work to do. Another instance where the director doesn't seem to have experience with musicals it felt? Not a lot of creativity or musicality in this Paradise Square-esc staging. A bland evening with a lot of great, but overindulgent, vocals. The story is oddly focused but maybe they can find it during previews - it'll be a lot of work...

I also plan on returning closer to opening night (Nov 5th to be exact) and speaking with the composer at stage door they said they should be frozen in two weeks, so obviously they have more than enough time to figure things out. I still encourage you all to go see it, especially for some of these vocals which might be some of the best currently on Broadway.
