Movin' Out was a fluke. They just wanted to give Billy Joel a Tony.
That is probably the most ignorant thing I've ever read.
Joel's orchestrations were phenomenal. Not only is he an amazing composer, he is an amazing musician...even his classical works.
MOVIN' OUT's orchestrations were so powerful and moving, they were completely TONY worthy.
Thanks for saying that...I agree 100%.
What do we think the odds are to have GREY GARDENS taped for "Great Performances"?
I mean...it contains two extremely legendary performances.
I'm guessing the odds aren't good. But, man would I love it if they did.
That would be awesome. I think they should, just for Ebersole and Wilson's performances.
No way is the the Best Musical of the year. It has a great book (well, at least in Act 2 - the first act drags a little) - but the score is pretty bland and forgettable.
Bland and forgettable?
Now I'm not just defending the score because I love it so much. It's just clearly brilliant.
Go re-read the entire NY Times article dedicated to the brilliance of GREY GARDENS' score.
I think what's in question is your taste - not necessarily the score.
Bland and forgettable? Where were you during "The Revolutionary Costume for Today", "Around The World", "Daddy's Girl", "The Cake I Had", "The Five-Fifteen" etc. Those are great songs. I respect your opinion, but I really disagree with it.
FYI, there's finally a show preview for th show. It's wonderful.
I don't make judgements on reviews, just on how I enjoyed it. The music bored the hell out of me. It falls between two stools - it's not "catchy" enough to be popular, and it lacks the depth of say a Sondheim or Jason Robert Brown score. So on all levels for me it was bland and boring.
Oh, Christ.
I just watched the show preview and this show needs to win Best Musical!I laughed, I cried, what a beautiful musical this is.
Not "catchy" enough? What the hell. What does that have to do with anything? And for the record, in that NYT artcile that munk mentioned, they compared the score to Sondheim. And I agree with them.

Ha. Haha. Hahaha.
The show preview isn't working for me.

Me either.
I'd start a petition to get the show recorded for Great Performances.
But we all know how affectful petitions are.
Obviously, you have a right to your opinion - just as I have a right to mine. I LOVE Sondheim, William Finn, JRB, John Bucchino - and to my ears both musically and lyrically Grey Gardens was a great play with a weak score and cannot be compared on any level to the brilliance of Sondheim et al. I don't suppose we're ever going to agree on this. But the songs literally sent me to sleep - and it is VERY rare for me to not enjoy any musical to some degree.

Thankfully, the New York Times doesn't agree with bob.
Craig, I think it's the video itself.
All the others seem to work except GREY GARDENS.
It worked for me. Huh.

Craig- that might help if I knew what a cache was...

Thanks. I'm more than a little computer illiterate.
Was just made aware of a firefox glitch which has been fixed. You should retry loading the video now...
bob, you have every right to your opinion, but I couldn't disagree more. I think it's a sublime score.
