Grey Gardens is a very moving play with excellent music and lyrics. It deserves to win several Tonys, however, the Tony awards is most likely driven by politics, and I will not be surprised if there is an upset.
lwoods, don't fret. Legally Blonde will probably still be running long after GG, Company and many other shows we adore on this board have closed.
It will also still be a lack-luster piece of corporate theater carefully targeted to pre-teen girls, although with any luck they'll eventually find a leading lady who has at least a little stage presence. At this point both Orfeh and Bruiser have a lot more star quality than LBB does.
Grey Gardens is certainly not for everyone. I loved the score right away and it has grown on me with repeated listenings. I used to play in high society wedding bands and I've also played a lot of 1940s era big-band music, so I immediately grasped the context of the Act I songs. These pieces evoke their time period but still also work as theater songs. The lyrics to "Two Peas in a Pod" are chilling when you consider what's coming. Act 2 is just incredible writing but is a bit more timeless.
Grey Garden's lyrics are a thowback to a time when writing theatrical lyrics was an art and a craft. Nothing like: "She's got a chip on her shoulder, I guess nobody told her, she's just got to be bolder, and buy a new folder, or I'll have to scold her..."

Someone said that the Grey Gardens score lacked depth... Were we in the same theatre?
GG will get best actress and featured actress, minimum, I feel.
LBB won't be nominated for best actress, I don't think.
I think your 2007 nominees for best actress in a musical will be:
Christine Ebersole (our winner!)
Kristin Chenoweth
Audra McDonald
Donna Murphy
Debra Monk
there you are-lwoods-LB will in all probability, be running long after GG closes. But, it's leads won't be raved about like Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson have been, nor will its material have affected its audience as deeply as GG is doing. It's changed my life in a small way.
(and continues to do so)
I think GG will at least win Best Actress and Featured Actress. I think they also have a great shot at Book and Orchestrations.
I'm a huge, card carrying, flag waving Curtains fan. But I would be happy to see GG take the Best Musical Tony.
What about Erin Davie, you think she will get a nomination? I loved her as Little Edie, such a beautiful voice. I really hope she gets nominated. But as far as Christine Ebersole, if she does not win the Tony then I will be speechless.
I'm rooting for Best Actress in a Musical and Best Featured Actress in a musical. After seeing the show for the fourth time on Saturday, there is no doubt in my mind that Christine and Mary Louise are giving one of the best performance of any female performers on broadway currently in a musical.
ragdoll- I would love to see Erin get a nomination, but I'm not sure if she'll get one. There are a lot of very good female supporting performances this year.
Personally I believe Spring Awakening deserves the Best Musical Tony. However, if it were to go to a another show I would hope it would be GG over any of the others.
Gypsy-you're right on!
On another thread, someone said that Roma Torre said on NY1 that Audra has a real shot at Tony #5.
Hmmm...
I don't think so, Roma.
I'm personally rooting for Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson. They had better get those awards. Truly wonderful work. I thought their performances transcended the material. If it weren't for them, I might have flat-out disliked Grey Gardens. They really saved the experience for me. I may revisit the show because of them. And maybe I'll give the show another chance, although I don't know how much my opinion will change honestly.

Here's hoping GREY GARDENS pulls an AVENUE Q/JERSEY BOYS.
Wait, I thought Jersey Boys was a favorite to win?

I thought it was Drowsy- plus they won book and score. Maybe I'm wrong.
Yea, DROWSY pretty much picked up all of the other awards.
Oh, I didn't know that.
Than yes, I hope it pulls an Avenue Q/Jersey Boys.
EDIT: Fixed.
You mean AVENUE Q/JERSEY BOYS.
But WICKED didn't have the reviews that SPRING AWAKENING had.
And GREY GARDENS doesn't have the reviews (or the attendance) that AVENUE Q had.

My dad has never liked the idea of me pursueing (sp?) theatre as a career, but he's always supported me. He just doesn't like musicals, doesn't understand the appeal of them, doesn't understand production and show biz and such. But when we went together to see Grey Gardens, he said "Well if THAT is musical theatre then you can sweep the stage for all I care as long as you do something for it." Which doesn't SOUND like a compliment, but BELIEVE me coming from my dad it does.
GG is just that good. If you can change the mind of my one-minded-stubborn like only arabic people can be-against musicals Daddy then you are DEFINTLEY good enough to win Best Musical.
It has just been a while since I fell in love with a musical for it's script as opposed to JUST it's music, know what I mean?
