Yes, as NBC said, it's the Monty Python show which is set to come into the Shubert. Sad for the people who work at the Shubert (not with the individual shows) -- they'll be out of work for a few months

Posted: 4/21/04 at 10:43pmThere's another show I won't be able to see on Broadway any time soon. I guess there won't be any more "PATTI LUPONE SHOULD REPLACE BERNADETTE!" conversations, eh?

Posted: 4/21/04 at 10:48pm*sigh* I will not pretend that this was one of the best shows I've ever seen, but I am sad to see it close...and sad that Patti never got a shot at it. :)

Posted: 4/21/04 at 10:52pmPeople were so kind and lovely to Bernadette through every single step of the Gypsy experience, how could she possibly NOT want to come back to Broadway right away? Like September, even?

I am sad to hear that. I loved Gypsy and Bernadette in the role.
I have to see it a second time before it leaves.
It is a very moving show and I love her Rose's Turn.

THAT'S WHERE YOU ARE WRONG!!!!!!!!
But back to Gyspy...... If it does go on the road.. I do hope they give it some new direction. And I would love it if Bernadette would hand it over to someone else.

Posted: 4/22/04 at 1:31ami agree with DAME-O..kinda like Namo, cause they sweat each other. alas, dame is right. please get me some new direction and someone other than bernadette. i LOVE her in so much (especially Sunday) but she's wrong for role, or cinnamon roll. I saw it a week before the Tony's last year, and I thought there were SO MANY problems! Here's the deal: It's one of the BEST MUSICALS EVER WRITTEN!! of course people are sad to see it go, it's a brilliant show. However, my diagnosis, if it were Patti as Mama and directed by someone else, it would have done a lot better..and maybe won some Tony awards! I'm sorry - Marisa Jaret Winokur over a Mama Rose for Best Leading Actress- you can't tell me that was supposed to happen!

Watching the Sweeney DVD with Lansbury makes me yearn for Lansburys Gypsy.
Oh and Master.... Dame soaks in Calgon every day.

I had the great opportunity of seeing GYPSY this past Saturday at the Matinee. First of all, let me just start by saying that I was in totally awe. How could Bernadette give this kind of performance week after week for a year. It was crazy! Bernadette Peters blew the freakin' roof off of the Shubert Theatre. I have never in my life witnessed a performance such as that. Bernadette's Rose was driven, angry, scorned, but also she was sexy. lovable and had a hell-of-a-voice. I should not forget Tammy Blanchard who gave an effortless performance as Gypsy Rose Lee (Louise). She was unforgettable. I couldn't take my eyes off of these two ladies. I was so caught in Bernadette's web ... I couldn't wait for her next move. This was the one show where I just didn't want to leave the theatre. I could have sat there for hours.
So I am very disappointed that the show is closing. It's a gem on the GWW. I hope it can live on for a while. Maybe it will have a usefully "after Broadway" life.

Posted: 4/22/04 at 11:23amWell; I thought htis revival was boring and that she was miscast. And for Gypsy to come off as a boring show something somewhere went really wrong. But many of you liked it alot.. So if you feel the urge... hussy up to the shubert cause you only got 5 weeks.

Just want to point out one thing about Lansbury's performance:
So many of the original keys were changed for her...sometimes in the middle of songs (see: Rose's Turn).
