GYPSY: 4/27/08

I'm hoping this was an off-night for Patti.

She was blowing through lines and jokes, and her famous mush-mouth made it difficult to understand some of her other lines. Other than that, she was just fine. Just not orgasmically fantastic.

It will be a sad day for the Tony committee if they don't give Laura Benanti the award because "she's young, she'll have a chance", or for any other earthly reason. She blew everyone else out of the water.

Everyone else was fine, Boyd Gaines much more than.

Best part: at the end, when Rose started crying and Louise rushed to comfort her. Also, Louise's really creepy laugh.

PS. It didn't bother me that the sets looked cheap; I just accepted it as part of the Vaudeville connection. It bothered me that they were so sparse.

No...Patti.

So far (this run) she's been annunciating all of her lines and most of her lyrics perfectly. Sorry to hear this.

I saw her last night and she was absolutely perfect. I've seen Gypsy 9 times on Broadway so far, and last night she gave the best performance out of all of them. It must have been on off day for her today. Maybe she was tired from last night.

She didn't cough once last night. She sounded AMAZING. The best I have ever heard her. The final 'for me' was incredible.

So glad to hear that, Antiandrew.

Her final FOR ME is amazing. I love how she effortlessly belts the ME straight-tone, and she still has more power to do the scream.

Meanwhile some Roses couldn't even sing FOR ME in one breath.

Patti, apparently, has been battling pneumonia (as it plagued both her and Laura).

She did cough a bit today, and had an awful choking spell during "Together Wherever We Go" that caused the trio to get a little off musically and lyrically but they pulled it off. Patti is a trooper and got through it.

You can tell her voice is getting tired, but her performance is still stunning.

I saw it a few short days after the first preview then today again - her performance is a knockout. Her "Rose's Turn" is MINDBLOWING.

Patti's "Everything's Coming Up Roses" was the highlight of the show for me, aside from Benanti.

I saw the show on Friday (my 4th time seeing it - once at Encores, once in previews and once this past Tuesday) and she was BEYOND AMAZING. I was blown away by "Rose's Turn", it was just incredible. Sitting in the front row (YAY for student tix!) and seeing her so close definitely increased my enjoyment but she really was on fire - the best I'd ever seen her. She did caugh a few times but was in perfect voice.

So I guess she was tired after giving it all during the previous shows, plus being sick....that's too bad.

Couldn't help but toss in my 2 cents. Perhaps she had 2 bad nights because when I saw the show, I didn't understand many of the lyrics. Even ones that I thought I already knew!!! I don't think her Rose is Tony worthy but I'm very much aware that I'm in the minority here. I've somehow managed to avoid commenting too much on this production but I can't help but shout out my opinion. I think some of the actors were aloud to "explore" there way to performances that are so far over the top that, for me, the story is not being told the way in which it was written. For example, Leigh Ann Larkin's portayal of June, although one we haven't seen on broadway before(and sort of an interesting take on the part) doesn't exactly fit with the rest of the storyline and characters. With all the attitude, why would Mr. Granzinger want her? (my 2 cents...remember?) In a similar fashion, I find Ms. LuPone's Rose to be a little cartoonish and not connected with the other actors and I simply did not enjoy it...at all. At the end of Rose's turn, I felt like it was Patti LuPone taking a bow and reacting to the audience's response...not Rose's imagination. Also, why are tears streaming down Louise's face during the very innocent "Little Lamb". For me, the great thing about this moment in the story is that Louise is singing this song very innocently and the last line comes as a surprise to us. It's surprising because it's as if she asks the question ("I wonder how old I am.") before she even realizes she's asking it. Right?? She seemed to be emotionally ahead of the story. I'm not saying that I think it's their fault. I think it was Mr. Laurents' responsibility to reign in their performances to tell the story in the best way possible. AGAIN...just my opinion. It is amazing to me that Boyd Gaines manages to come across as a real guy as Herbie with all the scenery chewing going on around him. Also, did it bother anyone else that there was a real door in the hotel room but they had Louise mime opening a window to say something to someone outside?? I didn't get it. Sorry.

I do agree that the one thing wrong, with what I otherwise believe to be a perfect production, is Louise miming the window.

Leigh Ann Larkin was fine, too; her problem was that, while Patti was zipping right through her lines, Larkin took the time to pronounce every... single... syllable... of hers. Especially when she's talking about how much she hates her act.

Larkin has gotten more and more, uh, "into the role" over the past few weeks. At first, her work was spot-on and fabulous. Now it is just fine. She's taking the over-enunciation a bit far and dragging her role on forever. It makes sense what she's doing, but at the same time, it is just a bit too much.

The miming the window thing is stupid. Laurents should have cut it.

Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

Leigh Ann gets more and more brilliant ever time I see her. Her performance is truly something special, and that girl is going places.
