Hey!
I was just wondering if anyone has either worked of performed or seen shows at the Galveston Island Musicals in Galveston or at the Granbury opera house in texas? I am doing summer stock there this summer, and wanted to get some ideas since I am traveling all the way from Boston!

Are you talking about the outdoor theatre stuff, or the stuff at the old opera house?
I used to live near Galveston and have attended both.

I am not sure if it is outdoors or not but the website is www.galvestonmusicals.com

I have a friend who worked at Granbury Opera House MANY years ago--it has a pretty good rep.
Galveston is a pretty cool town--very gay-friendly (at least for Texas) and there's some fun chi-chi stuff there. It's a pretty artsy town. The beach is kinda gross and dirty, but hey, it's a beach!

I don't know much about it but one of my best friends is gonna be there this summer as well; are you in the All Shook Up/Annie Get Your Gun cast or the Music Man cast? She's in ASU/AGYG.
Cheers,
C.

The opera house has some fun stuff. Most of the shows are of a regional-plus quality. I saw mediocre Fiddlers and Josephs there along with a bizarre Forum starring Rip Taylor and Jean Stapleton's Eleanor Roosevelt thing, along with a lot of comedy/variety stuff: Debbie Reynolds, Bob Newhart, Harvey Korman & Tim Conway, etc.
The outdoor theatre is of a little lower quality, but I saw some decent productions there. They usually get a few marginally known actors (think Jack Dabdoub level) for the leads and fill out the chorus with locals. The setting is awful, though. First, you're on the Texas coast in the summer, so it's hot, humid and full of mosquitoes (bring bug spray, by ALL means). Plus, it's really uncomfortable seating, and everyone's moving about getting popcorn and stuff, so it's really distracting. The music is all canned. No orchestra. When I saw "Oklahoma!" the tape failed, and they had to sing "People Will Say We're In Love" a cappella.
Granted, this was several years ago, and I seem to recall that they've changed the venue, so perhaps it's better now.

Posted: 4/4/08 at 1:10pmI've been told I'm doing Music man and Country Roads which is all John Denver music, I think I first fly out to granbury then to galveston then back to granbury.

Probably not the information you are looking for, but, I have seen South Pacific at the outdoor theater in Galveston about 15 yrs ago. A very nice venue. I don't remember there being a cover on the stage or the seating and no curtain. I have no idea if it was part of the performance, but during the performance miltary planes flew overhead at one point. The performance was very high quality.

I believe I saw the same show, EDFan. In fact, the aforementioned Jack Dabdoub was Emile.
It was definitely one of their better productions that I saw -- but still had the heat/mosquito problem.
(fitting for the show, I guess!)

Posted: 4/4/08 at 4:41pmThank you so much everyone for your input, I'm sure it probably has changed during the years, but none the less I am very excited to do Music Man, and I will be sure to bring lots of bug spray if it is outdoors!
