DGrant: y'know I'm sure you're right and that this is the best thing he's offered right now. unfortunately there isn't a huge demand for amazing older baritones on Broadway, and he can only recreate his famous roles so many times. so in that respect, it's great for him to get some steady Broadway work and some exposure to the younger, newer Wicked audience. this will console me once my temper tantrum is over.
and i have no doubt he'll make the role better. he has a habit of doing that, even with roles that are great to begin with (it was hard to beat Cariou's Sweeney). when he takes over the Wizard, it'll be interesting to see what a man of his talent, commitment, and stage presence can do with it. mainly I'm afraid of my initial shock the first time I hear George's incredibly rich voice manhandle those tunes Schwartz was nice enough to plunk out for the Wizard.

He is SO far above this show...but maybe he'll lend an air of sophistication to it that it so sorely lacks. I just think Mr. Hearn would be wasted in such a small and badly written role.

It's a hit show, and a job is a job. He wouldn't be taking it if he didn't want it for some reason.

Pneumonia - wow. I hope he recovers quickly. I worked with him years ago - can be a demanding p.i.a, but also very charming, sweet, and gentlemanly.

George Hearn will be stepping in on July 20th for Joel Grey, who is seeking treatment for his illness. He's going to a lung specialist.

If this turns out to be true, I literally will be sick. George Hearn is an immensely talented performer and his talents would be horredously wasted in this horrific show and disgusting role. He needs to do projects worthwhile and worthy of his immense talent.

Ponine- Like everyone said, some of Hearn's finest work is on the Sweeney Todd DVD. Or VHS, if that's all you can find. I also like him in the Follies in Concert recording. (CD or DVD)
Just going by memory, I think you can also find him in the OBC of La Cage Aux Folles, the 1994 L.A. Cast of Sunset Boulevard, and probably a bunch of other Sondehim concerts.

He won an Emmy for the original filming with Angela back in 1982, for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program.
