My 3 favorite German cast recordings:
1. Dance of the Vampires
2. Hair
3. Cats
RENT does have a German recording, for the record.
I have Kiss of the Spider Woman and Sunset Blvd.
Kiss is great.
The German cast recording of SUNSET BOULEVARD with Helen Schneider and Uwe Kröger is awesome and is a must have for the fans of the show.
It is, but i just cant get past Uwe's gayness.
Hamburg Cats is by far one of the best. The Vienna Phantom is also very good.
My other fav. german one is the Bremmen jekyll & Hyde. Although far too short,, Ethan Freeman is Brilliant

Kiss of the Spider Woman
Sunset Boulevard
To name a couple
There's also one of Miss Saigon from Stuttgart, but I heartily un-recommend it.

Lizzie? How come you don't recommend it? I was listening to it the other day, it's not incredible, but it's no Korean Evita, by any means.
I'm a german language buff, so maybe I'm overlooking something.
Uwe Kroger seems really...delicate and tentative and definitely not hard and jaded enough for Chris. Aura Deva's vibrato could shatter planets, and Raymond Sepe just isn't very interesting.

Is that Kroger on that album? Hrm, I think he's not all he could be on the Rebecca recording either. I'm not a huge fan of his. Although I do like the Vienna Cabaret with him.
Try to get the new Vienna Volksoper recording of SOUND OF MUSIC. It is truly wonderful!
Miriam
I don't really like the German cast of Rent or the German Bad something cast of Jesus Christ Superstar or the JCS recording w/Irina Alex either. I love the German cast of Aida (Maricel is amazing!), the Duisberg (I know I probably spelled that wrong) cast of Les Miz and the Wicked German cast.
I second the Duisberg Les Mis cast album (I probably spelled it wrong too) -- that's what I came on to post, and the person before me already had
I've listened to it a good bit, and it's excellent
Especially 'Morgan Schone' (probably also spelled wrong, but you get the idea I hope)

I've been trying to track down the German recording of the JOSEPH revival. I heard it was good.

don't forget die dreigroschenoper. That's always some good fun.
KANONENSONG!
und
die schlussstropen der moritat.
As already mentioned, both SUNSET BLVD. and Jekyll & Hyde: Bremen Cast are the only two German recordings I have and for a good reason!
The Vienna recording of Cabaret is actually kind of horrifying; while it's certainly possible to rip away all the context and pretend the show is about Happy Fun Cabaret Time, it will creep the living hell out of anyone familiar with the plot. If you want Cabaret in German (and trust me, "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" will send chills down your spine), get the Düsseldorf one, not the sanitized Vienna version.

The Vienna cast recording of Jekyll & Hyde is actually a mixed bag. On the one hand, Thomas Borchert has one of the best voices I've ever heard in musical theater today but Maya Hakvoort plays Lisa (in this version, Emma becomes Lisa once again) and...I just hate her voice in general. And Eva Maria Marold is actually not that great a Lucy. Her voice just doesn't do it for me. Which sucks because I loved her as Magda in Tanz der Vampire.
The cast recording of the production in Graz, Austria of Frank Wildhorn's Dracula is phenomenal. Thomas Borchert plays Dracula to perfection. Jesper Tyden plays Jonathan. Lyn Liechty, who played Lucy in the Bremen production of Jekyll & Hyde is a phenomenal Mina. Caroline Vasicek is an amazing Lucy. Uwe Kroger, I personally think, sounds great as van Helsing even though his voice has deteriorated since then. To my knowledge, it was deteriorated even then. They just digitally fixed it apparently. And the orchestrations are ten times better and fuller than the awful orchestrations on Broadway. It has more of a rock sound to it which is more typical of European musicals, particularly original German language musicals and not just translations.
