Lets just hope the London critics like it. It did very well with critics here in Manchester when it did its out of town (it got raves from everyone)
Ive had the act 1 finale on a loop lol. Ive seen it twice already in Manchester but the cast album has made me book again to see it in London

I think Critics are gonna be divided. I honestly believe critics nowadays are more concerned with writing a hate-everything letter then a love one...and with a show that combines spectacle with great music...idk...I can see them really ripping this apart.
However, it's gonna be the next WICKED if that happens...it will become a massive hit.

I think it will be mixed as well (Quentin Letts in the Mail will hate it, he seems to hate everything)

Best12Bars - I agree with you 100%. I know that often it's the lyrics that suffer when you have pop composers doing a musical for the first time (I will be kind and not count Dave Stewart's awful, not even good camp, Barbarella musical that played briefly in Austria or somewhere). They're not only filled with feeble lines and vague expressions, something I admit I don't mind at all when I'm listening to pop music, but they're just so generic and I think could do with a more character/story based rewrite. (Maybe this is less of a problem on stage when you at last see the action).

I do really like the score though--and I definitely think it has a better chance of being successful on Broadway as well compared to some other recent West End shows (I'm talking adaptations like Dirty Dancing.) Updated On: 7/13/11 at 08:10 PM

Yikes dont put Dirty Dancing in with Ghost, Ghost is an actual musical with an original score, Dirty Dancing is just the film on stage (plus blame Australia for that one, not us lol)

Ha, ore than fair, although I know many people who when they hear about a UK musical based on Ghost automatically assumed it was another jukebox musical. Thank God they've actually tried for something ambitious

^Ghost is basically the film on stage too. Aside from the new songs the book is basically the movie screenplay word for word except 4 million dollars is changed to 10 million dollars and the penny under the door bit is now a letter instead. Wow. Big changes.

That aspect doesn't bother me as much as not having new music would - I guess I expected it since the book is by the movie's screenwriter.

One question, on the youtube performance of Here Right Now that premiered back in the early Spring (and is still up) Carl has a lot of counterpoint in Here Right Now. On the Facebook link they list Carl as singing the song, but I swear all I can hear is Sam and Molly--and music wise I quite liked Carl's counterpoint, which is completely gone. Is this now how it's done on stage?--if so am a bit disappointed

Here's the original version

I have been listening to this SO much. I can't wait to have the actual recording. I love almost all of the score ("Ball of Wax" being the strongest exception). "Suspend My Disbelief/I Had A Life" is absolutely gorgeous. I really hope this transfers soon.

I'm so excited about this. I've always thought Ibsen's play about syphilis would make a great Broadway musical.

Eric, if I remember rightly Carl only sings the "Time keeps rolling on" section or whatever the lyrics are, which he still sings on the cast recording. I can't recall any counterpoint in the song - he might still sing the "somewhere, somehow" bits but to be honest Andrew Langtree was almost inaudible on the night I saw the show so it's hard to say what he was singing!

Thanks! I kinda screwed up by saying counterpoint I realize--that was the section I meant (is it technically a bridge? Anyway) For some reason I thought it wasn't on the streaming cast album, but I admit I've only listened to it quietly while working. LOL

We saw this on our recent trip to London and absolutely loved it! It was our favorite theatrical experience of the last 5 years or more, next to Passing Strange. Caissie was fantastic and made you forget Demi ever played this role. Sharon D. Clarke was a powerhouse and gave one of the best comedic performances that I have seen in a long time. People talk about how Brits are stingy with their standing O's, but everyone was on their feet as soon as Sharon walked onto the stage during curtain call. The reviews may be mixed when this opens, but I can guarantee that this will be a huge hit in the UK and eventually here in the states!

Thanks Songanddance - so that part of the song was changed. Too bad, I liked it, but it's still a good opening.
