Gigi or On the Town?

It's not about a French girl being whored out to older men. It's about the transition of a young girl that runs around the house and who is very backwards for her age, and her aunt and grandmother trying to turn her into a young refined sophisticated lady during the Belle Époque.
The same team produced My Fair Lady and it seems that the people on this board and the critics didn't have such a big issue with that transformation piece. Gigi is amazing and that Disney girl is a big talent. Not to mention Dee Hoty, Victoria Clark, Corey Cott, Steffanie Leigh, Howard Mc Gillin and the entire ensemble. The 18 piece orchestra is also fantastic.

"but I did not think it had any greater or more lush sound than any other show I've attended. I think the orchestra sounded much better at Something Rotten!, which I saw the next night."
Yikes. All I can say is yikes. Did you also not find The King and I's orchestra impressive?

On the Town. Great production, even if the story is a little antiquated.

""On The Town is the better show.
Although I will say that I did not notice that much a difference in the sound of OTT's full 28 piece orchestra than in other shows with slightly smaller orchestras. I went in expecting that the orchestra would sound better than average (since everyone talked about how it was a "full" orchestra), but I did not think it had any greater or more lush sound than any other show I've attended. I think the orchestra sounded much better at Something Rotten!, which I saw the next night."

Lol thanks. It was certainly a great orchestra. Perhaps it was the sound design of the show, and not the orchestra itself, that made me feel as though it sounded like the average show (which is not an insult). Say what you will about Something Rotten!, their sound design team was ON IT.

It's true that sound design can hamper an otherwise glorious orchestral/vocal performance. I seem to remember hearing lots of positives regarding the sound design from others here early in the run and when I saw it a couple of weeks ago it was great. Where were you seated? I was, center, row G or H (I think) in the Orchestra and the sound was glorious there. What struck me was how clearly and intimately I heard the orchestra and yet how, for lack of a more technical term, organic everything sounded. It never felt overamplified and echo'y as so many shows do these days and yet I felt totally enveloped by that glorious Bernstein sound.

For OTT, I was sitting about midway in the orchestra section, a couple seats from the aisle. The sound was very good, don't get me wrong. Just average, it seemed.

Interesting. Who knows. Perhaps it was off that night, perhaps you have a more sensitive ear than I do. Either way, I gave you a hard time and you reacted with cool-headed grace. So, kudos you.
