Posted: 4/6/07 at 1:43pmAnyone else catch the booted Idol contest on Idol Extra? When she was asked her big dream in life, she said it was to play Elphaba in Wicked and added, "Broadway, call me." Yeah, yeah, yeah. Whine all you want about Wicked but I'd rather contestants like her call Broadway their dream than listen to Sabrina Sloan's little putdown of Hairspray.

I think she'd some major vocal training for any Broadway role. Her voice isn't very consistent.
But can she act?

I don't think her voice is strong enough for Elphaba either, unless she's been secretly hiding her true talent, which I doubt. She didn't say if she'd acted in the past. I thought it was interesting that she was more interested in playing Elphaba than recording her own CD. I never would have guessed there was a musical theater geek hiding inside her rocker chick persona.

Posted: 4/6/07 at 1:54pmWell, she's committed to the Idol tour, and that will keep her busy for awhile. Great to see her interest in Broadway, but I see her more as Maureen in Rent than Elphaba.

I could honestly see her as someone in SPRING AWAKENING.
She could definatly replace like Krysta, but now with her popularity, people would recognize her sitting there before the show.

Posted: 4/6/07 at 2:21pmWhat did Sabrina say about Hairspray? I do vaguely remember her saying something negative.

Posted: 4/6/07 at 2:21pmI think Gina could be great, if she has the acting ability. I agree, I see her more as Maureen. I don't believe that this point she could sing Elphaba eight times a week, but with more training she definetely could. She's so talented.

I have a question.
Sabrina Sloan was a Dynamite, correct? I thought Idol rules stated that one couldn't be a member of Actor's Equity Association. Well, if she was in Hairspray, wouldn't Sloan have to be a member of AEA unless she was in a non-Equity production?

Like I said, the Sabrina Sloan Hairpsray comment was a mild putdown, imo. Here's the text from her exit interviews.
Will you go back to starring in 'Hairspray' on Broadway?
I'm definitely thinking about a solo career. I'm not opposed to going back to Broadway if it's the right role. My 'Hairspray' days are over for sure. (Laughs)
I didn't care for the last comment and the laugh afterwards. What was so funny about the question? It's not like the reporter asked her if she'd be returning to her job as a McDonalds' cashier.

Posted: 4/6/07 at 2:47pmI can't imagine Gina be able to sing any Broadway score eight times a week. Her voice isn't nearly strong enough, and she would need intensive vocal training to even attempt it. No way she could sing either the role of Elphaba or Maureen.

Posted: 4/6/07 at 4:19pmI mean maybe Gina could do Elphie you never know. But I do see her more in a rocky musical because she is very edgy. I also would really like to see Melinda in something.

Posted: 4/6/07 at 4:42pmI guess she think it's a funny question because she's sooo above Hairspray now. Whatever.

I think she has the raw ability, but would certainly need training to withstand the schedule. (Maybe not ever for Elphaba, though.) Doesn't seem to me like she'd object to training, though.
She'd also need to take that damn tongue ring out. I have nothing against the look, but it did mess with her enunciation.

we dont know the context of Sabrinas comment. may be she meant touring...
but really there is no 'showcasing' role in hairspray for a young black woman.
so - she wants to move up. let her.

I seem to recall Lea Salonga doing the same thing on her tour and Carnegie Hall concert, but it was a little more subtle
If a Tony winner didn't get the call I doubt they're going to give Gina a ring unless it's for TourCo
