Gold Derby's 2016 Tony Awards Predictions

I still think She Loves Me is going to win Best Revival.

"

What is your reasoning for this? Doesn't it seem more likely that The Color Purple will take it since it has an open ended run?

whoever Andy Humm from Gay USA is has some odd top picks, most of all Lin, Phillipa and Jennifer Simard for acting. actually he seems to have Hamilton picked for everything in except for featured actress, which seems like a sure thing.

"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."

I don't think the length of its run has any bearing on who wins the award.

gpysy, I saw another prognosticator choose Lin for the win in the acting category as well.

I don't think he's going to win that award, but there seems to be some late momentum for him.

I've begun to think Lin may take the Best Actor prize as well -- simply because the momentum for Hamilton is just so overwhelming and he is the face so front and center of everything involved with that show. He has become as big an instant celebrity in his day as Streisand was in hers.

I'm currently going out on a limb and predicting Danny Burstein to win Lead Actor in a Musical. I think both Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom, Jr. may split the vote like how Colm Wilkinson and Terrence Mann did for Les Miserables back in 1987.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if that happened.

I do still think Odom is the winner, but if there's going to be an upset I would imagine it would be Burstein.

It reminds me of Ian McKellen and Tim Curry competing for Amadeus. Curry had the title role, but McKellen had the meatier part and won the award.

The fact that Lin will already be going home with two Tonys of his own might push Odom over the top.

Exaclty. People keep comparing this to the Les Mis guys in 1987, but the difference there is that neither one of them wrote the show and was nominated in different categories. Lin will be honored plenty without needing to win Best Actor, so I really don't think splitting the vote will be a thing in this category.

i heard a VERY unsubstantiated rumor that Oprah has been actually personally calling some Tony voters to ask for support. Now, if i got a phone call from Oprah, that would probably sway me! Again, just a rumor, but a good, fun one!

That may be true, but I still don't think that votes for Lin in Lead Actor would be completely out of the question. I don't think anyone on Broadway has been working as hard as Lin-Manuel Miranda this season.

Plus, Michael Riedel (say what you will about him) did write this up in his column not too long ago:

"He’s terrific as Aaron Burr, for which he’s nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, and I think he’s on track to be a big movie or TV star. But more than a few voters told me they marked their ballot for Danny Burstein of “Fiddler on the Roof” instead.

“He’s earned it,” one producer says.

My money’s still on Odom, but if there’s going to be an upset on Tony night, look for it in this category."

It may have only been a portion of Tony voters he spoke to, but it at least shows there is still some support for Burstein.

I don't think Lin carries the show on his back. The weight is carried by a stellar principle cast and an equally talented ensemble. And as many people have expressed before, the show will is the same (some say better) without Lin. If a show can thrive without a star, that star does not carry the show.
