Good Broadway songs for the gym

Posted: 9/23/04 at 11:36pmOK, I'm serious. I've been making some mix CD's to get me motivated while exercising. What do you think are some upbeat songs from Broadway musicals that are good for getting the heart rate up? "The Devil You Know" from Side Show is wonderful for this. What others?

I'll second the "Hairspray" nod..
Baltimore, Nicest Kids, Big Girl, Welcome to the 60's, Run and Tell That and especially "You Can't Stop the Beat" are great at the gym. Man, I can't get enough of that last song.

"I Go to Rio" - Boy From Oz
"Nicest Kids in Town," "Welcome to the 60s," "Run and Tell That," "You Can't Stop the Beat" - Hairspray
"We Both Reached for the Gun" - Chicago
"My Strongest Suit" - Aida
"Scenes From Italian Restaurant" (faster part) - Movin' Out (or you can go for the Billy Joel original)
"Little Shop of Horrors" - Little Shop of Horrors
Out of these, Hairspray would probably be the most "exercise friendly" song-filled show.

Good point. The show is radio-friendly, which is probably why the show stinks so bad on Broadway.

^^^ musetta, have your fun with that...
"Without Love" is also fabulous from Hairspray...a lot of the songs from Rent are also good
Oh, and Hairspray does't stink.
At all.
Some guy: You looked great!

Posted: 9/24/04 at 12:59amIt depends on what you are using. If you are on a treadmill at a slow, steady pace, then "Without Love" might be good. But take an aerobics class, then blast "You Can't Stop the Beat".

I like some of JRB's songs for the gym, most specifically:
"I can do better than that" from tl5y
"The River Won't Flow" and "King of the World" from Songs For A New World
A lot of Movin' Out songs work too
"30/90" from tick, tick...BOOM
Sorry, it's late, I can't think of any more...
And I second Rent songs, some of them are great and they always distract me on the machines so i feel like i'm done faster.

Hairspray-Nicest Kids in Town & You Can't stop the beat
Wicked-The Wizerd & I. Defying Gravity & No Good Deed. These last three have me flying on my elliptical machine!

Posted: 9/24/04 at 12:18pmThe upbeat songs from ttB and Rent would be good, as would most other upbeat music. How bout some songs from Grease? Greased Lightnin' would be a good choice!
