OK, I'm serious. I've been making some mix CD's to get me motivated while exercising. What do you think are some upbeat songs from Broadway musicals that are good for getting the heart rate up? "The Devil You Know" from Side Show is wonderful for this. What others?

Taboo always gets me worked up.

"The stage is where I live and come alive and act out all the things that go on in my life. It's not just what I do for a living, it's my shrink and my love affair. No one in my life has ever or ever will kiss me on the mouth like this lover called my relationship with my performance."

Agreed. I've included "Guttersnipe" and "Touched By The Hand Of Cool."

Almost every song from WE WILL ROCK YOU. I mean, it's music from QUEEN........how can you go wrong. And plus everyone will join in singing.

I'll second the "Hairspray" nod..
Baltimore, Nicest Kids, Big Girl, Welcome to the 60's, Run and Tell That and especially "You Can't Stop the Beat" are great at the gym. Man, I can't get enough of that last song.

"I Go to Rio" - Boy From Oz
"Nicest Kids in Town," "Welcome to the 60s," "Run and Tell That," "You Can't Stop the Beat" - Hairspray
"We Both Reached for the Gun" - Chicago
"My Strongest Suit" - Aida
"Scenes From Italian Restaurant" (faster part) - Movin' Out (or you can go for the Billy Joel original)
"Little Shop of Horrors" - Little Shop of Horrors

Out of these, Hairspray would probably be the most "exercise friendly" song-filled show.

Good point. The show is radio-friendly, which is probably why the show stinks so bad on Broadway.

Just because of that doesn't make it a stink show.

^^^ musetta, have your fun with that...

"Without Love" is also fabulous from Hairspray...a lot of the songs from Rent are also good re: Good Broadway songs for the gym

Oh, and Hairspray does't stink.

At all.

Idina: Somehow I got myself to the stage, came out at the end of the show, and I had some kind of closure.
Some guy: You looked great!
Idina: Thanks...I WAS SO HIGH! 8/21/05

It depends on what you are using. If you are on a treadmill at a slow, steady pace, then "Without Love" might be good. But take an aerobics class, then blast "You Can't Stop the Beat".

I like some of JRB's songs for the gym, most specifically:

"I can do better than that" from tl5y
"The River Won't Flow" and "King of the World" from Songs For A New World

A lot of Movin' Out songs work too
"30/90" from tick, tick...BOOM

Sorry, it's late, I can't think of any more...

And I second Rent songs, some of them are great and they always distract me on the machines so i feel like i'm done faster.

Why do we play with fire? Why do we run our fingers through the flame? Why do we leave our hands on the stove, although we know we're in for some pain? -tick...tick...BOOM!

From RENT there's "Today 4 U," "Out Tonight," "La Vie Boheme" and, of course, the title song.

Thanks, guys. Keep the excellent suggestions coming. What about "The Devil You Know?" Does anyone else exercise to that one? Man, I love that song!

norm can sing to me all day. i've just never listened to him at the gym...yet.

i second the uptempos in SFANW and tick..tick..BOOM.
also, lots of Dreamgirls, JCS, and The Wild Party would work too.
make a good mix of all of it!

But I won't live alone in a house of regret.

I always listen to Avenue Q. The songs are upbeat and you'll be laughing out loud as you run.

There's a great CD of Broadway overtures that makes great cardio music.

The upbeat songs from ttB and Rent would be good, as would most other upbeat music. How bout some songs from Grease? Greased Lightnin' would be a good choice!
