millions love mama mia.this reviewer says it is idiotic."
Yes, he did, and he may think that it is, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he didn't like Mamma Mia. (I've seen things that I thought were pretty idiotic, but I had a great time - I'm sure Spamalot will fit into that category - some things are meant to be idiotic.) Brantley actually gave Mamma Mia a positive review when it opened by the way, so he must have liked it to some extent.

"It's no surprise that anyone hates it... " Did I misunderstand? You also thought the review was perfect. I think you should go see it. You wouldn't be the first to expect to hate it and end up having a great time. In a way I agree with the critics, untill they "over dramatize" how bad it is and say it's painful, It's not It's Fun, Has great music, funny lines, yes cheezy too, and well worth the money to come out of a show smiling and feeling like dancing as several have done. As I've been reading the threads for awhile I've noticed that there are a number of people on this board that take joy in finding the negative without any backup. Theatre, movies, TV, art, etc is subjective and discussions are great, but you you need to be able to at least see something to really have a valid opinion. Yes I know I'm ranting! Sorry (sort of)
I thought his wording was perfect, I didn't say the whole review was - what he said about how it makes other shows on Broadway look good is what I've often thought of other shows.
I never said that I saw the show.
I never base my opinion of a show off of others' opinion.
I see every show that opens, regardless of what people think about it.
That's all I was saying. I hate cheezy shows - I think they're terrible. I even hate THE PRODUCERS and MILLIE, which is just terrible, chinchy drivel - but I still see them.

Munkustrap178,
That's what I was asking, why do you want to go see the type of shows you know you don't like? I think it's fine, I was just wondering. From they way you talk you know you won't like it, but you go anyway. I guess someday you might be surprised, and maybe you're able to keep an open mind while watching. I'll be anxoius to read what you think, and hope it's not too painful for you. :0)
I see everything because I won't know if I'll like it until then...that's obvious. I saw THE PRODUCERS when it opened because of all the hype and thought it was absolute crap. But I wouldn't have known that if I had never seen it. That's why I see everything.
'Just think of the roster of dim, dispiriting shows that have opened this season: "Brooklyn," "Little Women," the deceased "Dracula." Each of these clunkers now feels like a high point of professionalism thanks to "Good Vibrations,"'
Although I personally wouldn't include Little Women in that list, I have to agree with this comment. It was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw GV last week: 'So Brooklyn wasn't so bad after all'
I knew that this was going to happen, the show is just a joke. I feel sorry for everyone who is involved in it.
When they started tossing the beach balls into the audience at the end, I knew they were desperate.

"the fact that mama mia has done over a billion dollars worldwide shows i think that many more people do not agree with his opinions, then do. the fact that it is almost sold out week after week...carries much weight.just not everybodies cup of tea.but alas you 'sadly' as with many on this board have just been waiting to pounce and say i told you so."
"not praising it.not condemning it.said that i have not seen it.much work has apparently been going on with this show though.when it was seen by this already prejudiced reviewer(to these types of musicals)is a very valid question you said it...different taste.
millions love mama mia.this reviewer says it is idiotic.
as for margo.i always look for their opinions.when one carries some weight.as margo obviously does.they should i believe be a little less quick to condemn something.that is not their 'cup of tea'."
SJ13: Where are you getting these ideas? Margo has never "pounced" on "Good Vibrations" or, for that matter, any show that I can remember. Also, nothing is everyone's cup of tea. I, for one, saw "Mamma Mia" and I hated it. When you said "this reviewer says it is idiotic", that is their opinion, as ALL reviews are. Is it too hard to believe that these reviewers simply didn't like the show?
Actually, Ben Brantley liked Mamma Mia! when it opened, quite a bit. He gave it one of its best reviews. His saying something is "cannily idiotic" means that while Mamma Mia may be a stupid show, it KNOWS it's a stupid show, and delights in its own frivolity.

"Cheesiest dancing," "Ugliest set," "Embarrasingly bad," "dialogue is so lame," "tacky choreography," "terrible set (in case we didn't read "ugliest set" earlier),"
Leave it to Broadway.com to post an intelligent, well-thought out review.
Legitimate reviewers usually give reasons for their responses as opposed to a string of insults, don't they? Not that I'm claiming Broadway.com is "legitimate," but seriously, you'd think a talkinbroadway chatterati (14 year-old in Missouri) had written this in-depth analysis.

Here is what I Posted On:1/19/05 at 07:08:35 PM
Hey all,
I was able to see the show this afternoon.
What a disaster? That's coming from me, as well, as a whole host of people I heard talking during intermission and afterward.
The ushers saw me with the Post open, and wanted to read it during the show. At intermission, one usher came back and told me Michael Reidel was in the audience today. I saw him after the show.
I asked what he thought, and his response was (with rolling eyes), I hope they have enough white paper and tape to put on the door.
have you seen the show?
the mics don't work well. the music is too loud, so you don't hear the lyrics. the set doesn't make any sense.
there is no story. the choreography is terrible.
quite honestly, it looked like a musical review you would do in high school.
there is one little story that happens in the end, which comes out of absolutely nowhere. and then, there is no play on it once it's revealed.
i don't know when you saw the show, but coming from someone who did theatre for 12 years, I know a little something. i especially know what the audience and ushers said.
i didn't understand what point the orchestra had on being on stage in the first act, and then magically disappeared.
the videos of them driving were absolutely pathetic.
they did nothing with the giant plastic wave which sat on stage for most of the second act.
the choreography was so poor. tell me what was different in that compared to a high school production. there was nothing exciting.
entrances and exits were obscure as well.
costumes? what costumes? it looked like people just got off the box office line and went on a stage. look at the shoes carefully. when the guys were holding their surf boards, most of them had sneakers or flip flops on. hmmm. when they were on the beach at night (with that horrible video of waves), most had no shoes on. seems rather backwards. why, when they all came out dressed in white, did only 2 of them have flip flops on? not consistent.
lighting was all over the place. the moon ended up going all over the ceiling and the audience. the stage right doors were left open half the time to show the backstage.
where did the gay romance come from? and why, when they showed the 3 couples at the end, were the gay couple the only ones to not hold each other's hand?
PLEASE PUT SPACES BETWEEN SENTENCES. It's not fun to read a post like that.
Come on, did we really think this show would be any good? lol. The reviews are as expected.

Bronx, a show as bad as GOOD VIBRATIONS doesn't piss anyone off, it's sad that Broadway is being perpetually filled with mindless garbage. And these "theatre snobs" that you refer to are non-existent. It's your term for people who don't like garbage and go to the theatre to be challanged and inspired.
