Just got home- Sold out show. Its was an amazing day, despite (obviously) the fact that it's closing (if you're a big fan of the show)
Got to the box office around 1:30, and Ivy Vahanian was at one of the windows picking up tickets that she was leaving for friends and family. She ended up with extras, so she was waking around the theatre handing out tickets !!
Then I saw Brad Fleischer hanging out near the box office talking to friends. When he finished, he recognized me from Weds, and signed my "CB" cap for me- VERY cool !! (Nicest guy!)
During intermission, chatted with some people around me that were seeing show for the 1st time, and could not believe that it was closing. After the show, there was more disbelief !!
Apparantely, this was the most expensive play in Broadway history to produce every night.
Heard that they didnt even have the money to change the posters outside the theatre to one of Elbrick and Aduba (Aaron and Toby) !!!
Stagedoor was packed !!! When Xanthe Elbrick came out, a "Tony" chant started.
Ended up getting my cap signed by 15-20 cast members.... The only one that I wanted that didnt get was Bill Camp, who you could tell today was under the weather big-time.
Will really miss the experience of "Coram Boy" on Broadway !!
Testing, I think you are Coram Boy's biggest fan. I feel very privileged to have been there the first time you saw it :)
Thanks so much for the review. Let's hope that Xanthe gets the Tony! It is well deserved.
Brad Fleischer is the nicest guy...when my sister and I were sitting in the front row, during applause, my sister pointed at him onstage and whispered something in my ear, and he saw us talking about him, and winked at us :).
Love to a wonderful show!
I loved it. Missed it this afternoon with their no rush, no discounts thing. But I loved it the two times I saw it.
I will miss it.
Yeah, they all thought that it was pretty amazing (or insane, (but they wouldnt say it) ...LOL) that today was my 12th time seeing the show !! I just got lost in it each time --- I just think its incredible theatre, and I am really going to miss it !
Let's go Xanthe !!! Crossing fingers !!!
Testing, you have me beat, I only saw it 6 times.
One little sidenote that was pretty funny--- the castmembers today were getting shut out of all merchandise--- everything was just about gone (bought up by the other castmembers)
They were reduced to basically all buying magnets-
Hats, tees, posters, mugs--- there was nothing---- they were selling a 2-CD version of Handel's "Messiah", which I had to buy ---
thanks for the review of the last show! was there anything different about the curtain calls?
Not really--- they pretty much stayed to the script--- one funny thing DID happen---- in the scene when the boys are all eating the cakes, and Aaron is asked if he had one yet--- He replied yes, and half of the cake went flying---
Xanthe looked to be VERY choked up during the ending---
Quentine Mare was saying after the show that it felt like the cast was in a haze the last few performances--- they were REALLY shocked that the show closed so soon !!
^ I can only imagine. Especially since the initial statement said unless business picks up (or something close to that) and from all reports it HAD picked up. (Maybe a lot at lower cost tickets, but that could have produced a lot of word of mouth business.) So they may have been hoping that the crowds would result in an extension.
Yes, it's a fickle business, and they all know that. But...it sounds like there was never a "possibility" of it staying open, so that part of the statement was a little misleading. To everyone.
Thanks for the report, Testing--sounds like a great send-off for this stunning production. I will certainly always remember it...a beautiful thing to behold and listen to. It was incredibly refreshing to just enter a theater and be sent on an epic ride that made no pretense about being full of Big Important Ideas (and I did not appreciate the NY critics telling me that I wasn't demanding enough intellectually from my choice of theatre).
Broadway needs more plays like Coram Boy to add a little diversity to the non-musical offerings...I'm all for "deep" plays, but right now everything out there is probing my psyche so hard my cerebrum hurts. Here's hoping that I'll have the opportunity to see more productions in the vein of Coram Boy on my trip to the U.K. this summer.
Farewell, you big, beautiful show..."Messiah" will never be the same!
Testing, I admire your commitment to this show. We all tend to evangelize the things we love (Popular and her belief in THE PIRATE QUEEN comes to mind in most recent history) but you took faith in this show to a new level.
While I loved it when I saw at the first preview, I'm not surprised it didn't last -- 'twas a very tough sell. Still, if more people had been exposed to your constant pushing, I suspect it would have done much better. Thanks for commitment and for all of your efforts to spread the word.
Thanks, Smartful... although others can take credit as well--- there were a number of people that pushed this show, and are so sad to see it go !!! I just happended to be the most obsessive (so it seems...LOL) From the moment that the choir started singing each night, I got totally immersed in the story, and had not a care in the world for a few hours. Isnt that what theatre is all about?
I know it was recorded, so hopefully, more people will get to see it !!
I have even started calling my daughter "angel child" !
(Although I dont say "Andrew, Ma... Andrew, Da")
Looking over the Playbill, and I thought I was going nuts, but in the earlier "CB" Playbill, Philip Gaddarn (Bill Camp) is not listed in Act II-- I remember posting something about that when I first saw the show- In the current Playbill, he is--- wonder when/why they decided to make the change?
Not a big deal at all (especially now), but still interesting.
one funny thing DID happen---- in the scene when the boys are all eating the cakes, and Aaron is asked if he had one yet--- He replied yes, and half of the cake went flying---
Ok that is too cute- I saw it for the first time at today's matinee and I figured that's what was supposed to happen- made him look just like a little kid when it went flying. :)
No, that was the first time I saw it happen--- it was very funny--- I just love Xanthe's accent as Aaron--- she really captured and 8-yr old boy. Her overall performance in "CB" was amazing !
Thurs nite, Karron Graves flower popped off her ball gown--- that was hysterical !!
Coram Boy deserved a SOLD OUT show. Thanks everyone for the reviews, sad that i missed their last show due to their no rush, no discounts thingee...wish i was there when Ivy Vahanian was handing out those extra tickets.
I was there today and it was my first time seeing it. I was speachless at the end. This show absolutely diserved a longer run. I'm sorry I only got to see it once.
Brava & R.I.P Coram.

Yeah, I caught the last performance and it was beyond amazing. Deserved to be seen by many more people...
I hate to piss on a show's grave, but I went to CORAM BOY last night to give it a shot before it closed and didn't make it through.
Certainly not out-and-out godawful, but it really wasn't my thing, so I left at intermission and *gulp* theatre-hopped to catch GREY GARDENS' second half.
I'm sorry you didn't like it Miracle. I can understand how it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. For me it was far from perfect, but spectacular nonetheless.

>dancing on this show's grave<
Roscoe,
Was waiting for you..... What happended to your final post regarding "CB"?
I think we should all take up a collection and refund your money that you paid for your ticket.. Maybe it would lessen your blatant hatred for the show.
You didnt like it--- point taken.
