Caught the final performance at the Goodman last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very funny and the audience ate it up. I think the poignant scenes could use a little more digging, but it was a solid show that has potential for a decent Broadway run and positive notices, especially with the right cast. I'd see it again to see what changes they make and relive some of the really hilarious moments. My biggest quibble was the direction, which could use some refinement and tightening. Things didn't really take off until the business proposal got under way and the interpreters were employed. Before that, the delivery was really forced and stilted. Sets were wonderful and very effective. I liked it a LOT more than Steppenwolf's Detroit, also scheduled for a Broadway run. I think Chinglish and Stage Kiss are both more deserving of a Broadway run than Detroit (though Stage Kiss really is a show for theatre people).
Theatre people will love it, everyone else will ignore it. How so? I mean, I don't think it will be a blockbuster, but to me, it seemed like a witty romp that could develop some positive word of mouth. I didn't see any signs of something too esoteric or academic that would turn off the general public.
