I have heard that a DVD was made of the musical version of Broadway's Grand Hotel. I have been unable to find any record of this and would be grateful if anyone with information would let me know if it was ever made and/or is available. Many thanks.

I was the Grand Hotel freak of all time when it was playing, knew people from the cast and have a very nice full audio recording of the entire show (David Carroll, no less, in peak form) done on the house equipment -- but I've NEVER heard of a DVD recording out there. Anyone know anything about this?
Of course there are videos of the show. Both broadway and London. They're not "official" but they exist.
I tried to schedule a time next week to see Grand Hotel at Lincoln Center (TOFT Archives). Though I've only been slightly exposed to material from the show, I was really looking forward to watching this well-known musical and getting to see a big '80s spectacular. Imagine my disappointment when I realized that Grand Hotel is one of the shows you need permission to see. Unfortunately I had the same exact problem with Urinetown. I hate it when my plans are thwarted!
Well you need permission to see all the shows at Linclon Center - i.e you need a valid reason to watch it. I watched GRAND HOTEL a few years ago and didn't need any kind of special permissions to watch it - so that must be something new.
You can use any reason you want. You can write down that you're researching hotel management of thr past and you're good to go. There are certain shows though that require you to get written permission through the estates of the creators which is a really long process.
I would love to go to Lincoln Center and tell them that I need to watch GRAND HOTEL because I'm researching hotel management!
I think the major two names that you need written permission in order to view their shows are Michael Bennett and Jerome Robbins
There's a handful of others I've run into in the past and it really is what I think an unnecessary hassle. But I think the entire librarys restrictiveness is ridiculous.

And of the Bennett shows, you can view Chorus Line without permission. (Well not the record breaking video, that requires permission)

Like Jordan said, there are "unofficial" videos of both the London and Broadway Grand Hotel.
I remember there being five of them. There was one from the Detroit Try-Outs, before Yeston was brought in. One from I'm assuming a Broadway Preview, because "At The Grand Hotel" was not yet written. One with Cyd Charisse's first performance as Grushinskaya. One from Australia with Brent Barrett. And one from London
Is there a way for two people to watch the same video at the same time at the Lincoln Archive? (Two headphones to the same TV screen?)
Yes but they news to know two people will be there when you make the reservation. They'll set you up at two booths side by side and each person will get their own screen.
Michael Bennett, thank you, but I know that you need a valid reason to watch shows at Lincoln Center. Most of the time I just say I'm researching for a paper. When I called and asked about Grand Hotel I was told I needed permission to see it. Since there are so many shows that don't need permission, I just went with some of those.

If there are five known videos of Grand Hotel, it would seem that there would be a way to see one of them. Any suggestions?
THANKS.

In addition to the London video, there is a Broadway one with Lynette Perry, John Schneider and Zina Bethune who replaced Cyd Charrise.
I saw this show because of my love of karen akers originally. Walked out of there with love for David, Jane, Michael and Lilliane. I remember hearing that about a week after I saw it David left due to his illness.

GRAND HOTEL: the best direction of a musical ever.IMHO.
I often wish Tommy Tune would direct and choreograph a production of Sondheim's FOLLIES. Can you imagine? I think he may be the only living director with an extravagant enough theatrical imagination to pull off an amazing FOLLIES.
