It is indeed true that Carroll died in the restroom at the recording studio. I did the show in 99 in Seattle and Houston with some of the original Broadway cast who recounted this one night. Very sad.
frontrowcentre2, thank you for clearing up why it took so long for the album to come out. What I did was try to remember gossip from almost 20 years ago.
I have to love the album, but if you can get a soundboard recording of it, do so immediately. In my book, "Grand Hotel" ranks up there with "Follies" and "Golden Apple" as a show that should have been a two disc recording.
Many of my favorite parts of the show aren't on the album. Like the telephone scene where the Baron, Flaemchen, the Businessman, Michael Jeter and Karen Akers each use the phrase "Time is running out." And "Who Couldn't Dance With You" doesn't have the jaunty little button at the end of it in the show. One of the most brilliant moments was when the music stops and the dancers keep dancing and Michael Jeter is yelling at the Businessman to the sound of the stomp of their feet.
And Lillane Montevecchi's verse in "Love Can't Happen". I fell in love with that song the first time that I heard it. I saw the show twice in one weekend and tried to memorize that song. And I tried to memorize it when they sang a bit of it in the "Forbidden Broadway" take-off "Grim Hotel".
And EugLoven, the saddest thing about living through the crisis is when you get reminded of someone you never thought that you'd ever forget.
