re: Grease Revival...

Okay, I admit that if the show were staged properly (as a sort of satire than a bubblegum fluff show) then it would work much better. I guess I just got a bad perception of it in the multitude of versions that I've seen of it (both amateur and professional). It has always just seemed all over the place. I have never had a problem with the music (besides it always sounding way over-orchestrated, like someone said), but combined with the book and the production as a whole, many of the songs seem out of place.

re: Grease Revival...

The whole revival was dreadful in every respect. But even if you had the greatest direction, choreography, sets, etc., it could never work if the cast seemed as old as this one did. And this is a problem with so many shows about teenagers, eg. the recent play "Slipping." There are plenty of talented teens out there. (Look at "13") Just cast them in these parts and see how much better the shows will play.

re: Grease Revival...

It was one of the worst productions I've ever seen.

I truly despised it. The only thing that made me stay for the second act was Jenny Powers, who did deliver a very strong "There Are Worse Things I Could Do."

Well...her and the fact that I paid full price for an orchestra seat. Every now and then I still kick myself for that.

re: Grease Revival...

So many interesting things to respond to in this thread:

The only time a movie musical has ever improved upon its source material.

Actually, I believe that distinction was first given to The Sound of Music.

The interesting thing about the show is it takes place at the beginning of a transitional period for american youth. 1959 was the end of the proper post-war time and the generation in this show was the generation that was a big part of the change that happened in the 1960's.

What year is it supposed to be set? The original production opened on Broadway in 1972 and begins with a reunion scene, but I've never really known what year the reunion is supposed to take place. Does it say "Class of 19__"?

And certainly the movie was NOT an improvement upon what the musical was first - in fact, I blame the horrid movie version for turning Grease into something it never was.

I like the movie for what it is, but I hate that it ended up pretty much permanently changing the stage version. On stage, I'd rather see the original show with the original score.

I do have to agree the original book is poorly written unless the cast kicks the crap out of it.

The original book really isn't that bad. It's just that the show was meant to be performed in a very specific style that was quickly abandoned and forgotten once the original production closed.

re: Grease Revival...

Yeah it says in the script 1959 (I directed a school production not too long ago.)

"If we don't live happily ever after at least we survive until the end of the week!" -Kermit the frog "I need the money... it costs a lot to look this cheap!" -Dolly P. "Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"

"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofu
