Im making this thread as a test.
Apparently Grey Gardens has posted a closing notice. Broadway World is apparently deleting threads about it. I just wanted to see if they would delete this one too.
I don't know why they would as it's a legitimate rumor. Any word about it?
i think this one will be deleted for the sole reason that its being used as a test for deletion...haha, yeah
Anybody know why? The box office is doing well right now!?
Explanations have been pointed out on other threads. Look around.
I think it's likely since MLW is leaving on July 29, they would prefer to close with her and Christine while the show is still doing pretty well than bring someone new in and (most-likely) close when Christine leaves.
I state on my life that there are other actresses out there that could play these two roles. Why not give somebody else a chance?
The SHOW was wonderful. So were the performers, but the show would WORK without them.
There are other actors! Im surprised the producers/cast whoever is invovled in the choice are resfusing to continue telling the story.
I for one did not go for the performances.
With a closing notice, they are ADMTTING that the show isn't good enough to run without the two actors. Which is NOT true!

its the same as saying "Gypsy" wouldn't run without Ethel Merman.

No, it's not.
Do we need 20 threads on the same topic?
Now, I'm starting to understand the mods a bit more.

The SHOW would not SELL without them.
The show would sell if they brought in a bigger name then Ebersole.

Well first of all, theaterguy11, the original production of Gypsy closed when Merman left.
And look whats happened?
It's become one of the most revived musicals ever.
It's also considered one of the best musicals of all time.
Why not replace Ebersole and MLW and give more big name actresses a chance to tackle the roles.
Say it isn't so!
Mary Louise Wilson is great, but I think the show could survive without her. Especially with Christine.

Well, then perhaps Grey Gardens will see itself revived to great acclaim in the future. I was just explaining why saying it would close without Ebsersole would be like saying that Gypsy would close without Merman. But the original production did close with Merman, much like the original production of Grey Gardens will close with Ebersole.
I guess I'm just frustrated that the show isn't above it's cast. It's such a beautiful production. One that probably won't be revived.
I think there are other actresses out there that could make this musical just as good, if not better. They will never be given the chance. (And I hope nobody turned it down just becuase they think they're too big to replace somebody...)
theaterguy11, if you can come up with a few million dollars in cash in the next week or two you might be able to get Grey Gardens to extend its Broadway run.
I love Grey Gardens, but its closing reflects the financial realities of running a show on Broadway that doesn't have tourist appeal. Shows like this don't do well in August, and Grey Gardens has been limping along at the box office for its entire run.
This doesn't mean it isn't a wonderfully written show, and I also hope to see many other actressed tackling these roles in the future. I expect to see this happening at regional theaters, not on Broadway in August.

And when that acclaimed revival opens, we'll remember how delightfully bizarre the original was. See it before you wish you did!

(The original production of Gypsy did run longer than Grey Gardens, though.)
The show is just not making enough money to survive.
I think it's the Best Musical of the Season but Money talks.
The proof will be that it may have a great life with wonderful actresses in other venues.
And the amazing Broadway cast will of course continue their wonderful careers.
I expect to see this happening at regional theaters, not on Broadway in August.
- Huh? You expect this to be in regional theaters by August? The rights have to be released first.
I think he meant that instead of being able to see the show in August, he'll see it eventually in the regional circuit...I think.
Great reading comprehension there Ijay889. Was that sentence really that hard to decipher?
Good luck on your SATs, which apparently are years in the future.
