I caught the matinee of Grey Gardens today, after losing Hairspray lotto. I can't honestly say I'm disappointed about missing Hairspray. Grey Gardens was fantastic. I don't think I could have asked for better. The full cast was in, which is always a plus. I really have no complaints, except for the fact that I found Matt Cavenaugh's accent (as Joe Kennedy) a little annoying. He's a great actor, though. "Going Places" was really sweet.
I feel like Erin Davie is underrated. She has a great voice, and is a fantastic actress. She really handles the material well, especially the tension and her feelings about her mother.
Mary Louise Wilson is just great. Not much else to say.
John McMartin has a fairly small part, but he was a treat to watch. "Marry Well" was adorable. He also transitioned really well from being batty Major Bouvier, to being more serious and angry with his daughter. The character of Brooks seemed kind of pointless to me, but Michael Potts handed it well. The younger girls are adorable and very talent.
Now, Christine Ebersole... she is perfect. I was blown away by her performance. In act I, she really played the "all about me" card very well. Of course, her voice is amazing. Then there was the transition to act II. Ohhh, hi! "Revolutionary Costume" was hysterical. She definitely got into Edie's craziness. By the end of the show I was bawling. "Around the World" and "Another Winter in a Summer Town" were absolutely beautiful. I see a Tony nomination for her.
Okay, enough of my gushing.

I don't want this to sound creepy, but it's going to anyway. I was sitting behind you, I recognized you from your avatar and this thread verified my suspision.
Having seen the show already, Ebersole's performance is better than ever!

Haha Parks.
Nah, I just went home. Did Mary Louise sign? I stage doored the first time I saw the show a while ago and she didn't come out after the matinee.

I'm so happy you loved it!
I do want to say one thing about Michael Potts as Brooks. After seeing the show a few times, I came to realize that HE is the true "Gibralter." He is the voice of reason and the model of sanity in a "haunted house," so to speak. The backbone. There is only "clarity" about him; whereas, with everyone else, there is confusion and instability. (I'm leaving Jackie and Lee--the REAL children--out of this, of course!)
Mr. Potts' performance is SO understated that you hardly notice how strong he is amidst the chaos. Off-Broadway, his role was bigger and a bit more comedic (and he was terrific), so, although I regret not seeing more of him, I think his performance at the Kerr is even more purposeful than it was at Playwright's.
Anyway, that's just my perspective.

dancingthrulife04- I couldn't agree with you more. Ms. Ebersole's performance is one of the most moving pieces of theatre I have ever seen. I trust this show will do well at the Tony's.

STFU Baba Wawa never gets old!
The Kennedy's have annoying accents, what can you do...

I'm from Massachusetts, and the consensus there is that the Kennedys have their very own accent, unique to that family.
No one else talks like they do.
