Hello, all,
I am a newcomer here. I am a huge Grey Gardens fan. (Only seen it 4 times and going back in Feb. for #5!) Anyway, the posts in this thread are so reflective and incredibly deep. It's so refreshing to see a show that people connect with on a personal level. Here's how I do: I feel like Little Edie. My mom and I are very much alike and I even do the same thing she has for a living. Now, I'm beginning to realize that I am not my mom and I've got to move out of momma's house. I'll go nuts if I do stay. To make things even more ironic, I want to move to NYC. (I live in Florida right now and hate it.) I do feel imprisoned in a way. I just feel what Edie does. (Not that my mom is nearly as needy as Edith-she's just as obnoxious sometimes and as critical!) But, I feel, like Edie says at the end of Act I: "I can't stay another second. If I do, I'll vanish. I'm not your daughter, I'm your shadow!"
Oh, and Ebersole perfectly conveys that trapped feeling in Act 2.

i wish ya'll had seen the off-broadway version!!!
there were a lot of wonderful things about it!
& that Kristine McKenna book is wonderful!
she had another one before that, called BOOK OF CHANGES...i love her interviews, because they really dig in & talk WITH the subject AS A PERSON, rather than a celebrity; they're so intimate & conversational.
& they all feature some of my favorite illustrators!
the film is hypnotic. it can make you feel that you are tripping.

The hardest part of the show to watch, emotionally, was the end when Edith keeps calling for Edie. The dramatic tension - or suspense - was fantastic.

I'm glad to read this:
"A new Broadway cast recording is being considered, the producers announced."

Very good news, even if it's only being "considered". At the very least I thought they would have wanted to re-package the OOBCR for the Broadway run.
I just saw Melanie Griffith on TV today. She should be playing Little Edie in the new film. She is frighteningly right for the part. From her looks, to her body. She would be a revelation. I think they need to go older for Big Edie than Jessica Lange. Frances Sternhagan, Piper Laurie, or Brenda Blethyn maybe.
But Melanie Griffith would be spot on and she is the right age
I just re-watched The Beales of Grey Gardens. I agree with Munk, it has a completely different tone-more celebratory, less sad and depressing. The fashion show alone is worth the entire film.
"You ought to be in pictures..you're wonderful to me...I'm after little brother...oh, what a hit YOU would be!"
"There's only ONE Leslie Caron."
