Technically the first Grizabella and the first Gumbie Cat was Judi Dench. Even though she was injured and never went on she was still the first. Elaine Paige was the first Grizabella replacement. Updated On: 8/30/08 at 12:20 AM

She was going to play both Grizabella and Jennyanydots. Trevor Nunn interested her in the project by suggesting she play two completely different characters. She actually tore her achilles tendon rehearsing the Gumbie Cat number. Not a Grizabella scene. Once she was injured Elaine was brought in to play Grizabella and Myra Sands took over as Jennyanydots and the concept was abandoned.

Best Grizabella I ever saw was many, many moons ago, here in Los Angeles, at the now torn down Shubert Theatre in Century City. It was the Los Angeles company in 1985. Kim Criswell was Grizabella and she was absolutely brilliant! Brilliant beyond words. She was in the show for 1 & 1/2 years, and the show ran for 2 years.

"Cats" was my first live musical. . back in the late 90's. . some awful non-eq tour that I fell completely in love with.

Natalie Toro was my first Griz, and I thought she was frickin' fantastic.
