I think those titles would be fitting for a replacement Tony category, much like the Emmy categories for guest actors and actresses. I think 3 months is the minimum an actor should be in the role as a guest performer.

Do you mean maximum?
No matter what you call it, you still have the problem of getting Tony voters BACK to see a show they may or may not have liked in the first place. And those voters may be in shows of their own. Replacements go in to shows all the time; how many times are you going to force Tony voters to see CATS?
It's just not like the Oscars or Emmys where the performance can be viewed at one's leisure on a DVD.

Nah. Some guest performers take over a role for 6 weeks. I don't think they should be eligible. To be eligible, I think 3 months is fitting.
Then they really aren't a guest.
I don't see the rules on this changing. Ever. The voters (and certainly the nominators) already devote much time to seeing the new shows. It would practically be a full time job to include any sort of replacement category.

Couldn't they just hire more voters and nominators?
Increasing the prestiege of actors who come in as replacements and new exposure and acclaim to long running shows would be great for Broadway. The only negative point to this idea seems to be the logistics

I really can't see someone in a show show for 2 full years being thought of as a guest.
Hire? It's not a job. EVERY voter is suppose to see every show that is nominated. And every nominator is suppose to see EACH show that opens. I actually don't think it would make any difference to audience members. MOST don't see original casts, as most are tourists and aren't in the city every year.
I agree, there have been wonderful replacements in MANY shows. Doesn't mean they need an award for it.
