Looking forward to this, hope Goldman is able to produce the spirit on stage. Not sure Mandy would be able to do 2 big sword fights a night AND sing. But he could do the Count.

I cannot express how delighted I am about all of this.
Princess Bride is my Favorite movie of all time, and my favorite book. Now, I adore Adam Guettel and his music. I am almost positive this will top as my favorite musical of all time. I'm gonna go fan girl crazy on this show.
I am also so happy that William Goldman is writing the book, the man is a genious. If you want proof read the book version of Princess Bride.
I am actually so happy that I'm jumping up and down inside. I'm all flustered. This is the best news for a long long time.

I am so freaking excited for this. One of my favorite movies of all time and one of my favorite composers. This is pure bliss!!!
I have been hoping that with the trend of movies turned musicals, that this would be one. Hoping and Praying!!!! Yea! I hope Mandy revives his role in the movie just so I can hear him say "Hello My name is Inigo Montoya..." live!!!

oh god. i don't mean to spoil the party but... but... i just don't think A) this movie/book should become a musical B) Guettel isn't the right man for it.
that's just MY two sense... feel free to ignore!

Caroline - Many things don't seem like the right fit until they actually play out onstage. At first glance, this definitely doesn't seem ripe for musicalization. But look at all the shows that have succeeded on Broadway recently or are currently succeeding now. There's Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, a movie that seems too quirky for a musical, and yet they pulled it off. Spamalot, from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, is a smash success, and no one from the original team wanted to be involved because it seemed too ridiculous at first. Musicals can also get really random, a la Avenue Q, but that has succeeded and still is currently. Don't dismiss this project yet as "not right" for a musical, and Guettel needs to expand anyways, so why not have one the greatest of the "new composers" be the one to do it? That's my two cents (sense?). You can ignore it if you want.

To be perfectly correct, the other Pythons DID consider working with Eric Idle on Spamalot, as they thought the early drafts were quite funny and Python-like, but then decided it was "his baby." He usually wrote for Python by himself anyway.
And I'd LOVE to see Princess Bride as a musical. YAY!!!

Fair enough, but it still holds true that some "normal" people wouldn't consider Monty Python and the Holy Grail the best material for a musical.

Agreed. Though I loved it!

As did I. Though the things I've been hearing about the actors recently have been troubling. But that's another thread.

I have to admit, I'm a tad skeptical as well. I have no doubt that Guettel will write a soaring score with beautiful songs, but I too question the fit between his style and the style of the movie/book it's to be based on. That being said, I hope to be pleasantly surprised. God knows Adam Guettel's an amazing composer, so more power to him.
I would like to add though, that the comparisons to Sondheim's Into the Woods really should stop. Beyond them both being fairy tales, there are few similarities. Into the Woods is a dark fable about growing up, humanity's strengths and weaknesses, and community. It is full of intricate leitmotifs, musical symbolism, and so much more. Princess Bride as it exists now seems to be little more than a surface fairy tale, which is fine. There is definitely a solid place for whimsical and swashbuckling adventure stories, whether in books, theater, or movies, but I don't know that it translates to a high-art musical piece. That is, unless he overhauls it fully.

The Princess Bride is satire, and no, it isn't deeply intellectual. But, although it is satirical in tone, it holds forth that good triumphs over evil and true love rules. That's good enough for me.

"good triumphs over evil and true love rules"
which is what Adam Guettel longs to believe -- he is a perfect fit for the theme of this show.
