The original Runyon stories take place in the 30's. The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown was written in 1933.

I love Lauren Graham to death, but I just think she'll really over act and be a caricature of Adelaide. And then there's the question of can she/can't she sing...Definitely looking forward to reviews!!

a few people commented that she has a good singing voice, so Im more concerned about "oh, god, the dancing". that´s a challenge for her.

I wonder if there is some big noticable transition from 50s to 30s. Im not from US so I think I wouldn´t notice if I didn´t know.

I wonder why they changed the decade???

Actually, I always wondered why the original production changed the decade to make it contemporary (then).

There is a naivete to the characters that feels more "at home" during the Depression, when the stories take place.

Like John O'Hara's Pal Joey stories, these should definitely be read to appreciate the craft that went into writing the musical.

Penguin reissued them during the last revival with a great introduction by Pete Hamill.

"a few people commented that she has a good singing voice, so Im more concerned about "oh, god, the dancing". that´s a challenge for her. "

I think you are reading too much into that statement. I think it's more along the lines of somebody who hasn't danced for a while and now that they are doing it again every day their body has to get used to it again, in terms of aches and pains.

Alan Cumming made a similar comment during rehearsals for Cabaret, about how their seemed to be so much more dancing than their had been at the Donmar. It's not that he couldn't do it, just that it takes your body a bit to readjust to that kind of daily workout.

Depending on where in the 30's they are setting it the time period is not being changed that much. Remember, the show opened in 1950, so at most you are talking about pushing it back 20 years, and based on the costumes they are not going back that far, more mid to late 30's. And if I remember correctly, they never once reference what year it is supposed to be in the show, so ultimately it only affects costuming.

heo,

did you SEE Faith Prince as Adelaide? Beolved as she is, the woman played the part like she was in a Popeye cartoon. The role IS a caricature to begin with. Lauren should just act herself and she's halfway home.

Byron - well, Lauren didn´t have a reason to dance for 20 years so it´s lots of adjusting to do.lol She´s not a dancer.

"The role IS a caricature to begin with. Lauren should just act herself and she's halfway home."

Is this an insult?haha

Is Adelaide supposed to sing through her nose? I´ve seen the movie and I have a 1992 Cast recording but I´ve never liked the sound of Adelaide. Wonder what Lauren will do with it.

the main reason i'm excited about lauren as adelaide is that i think she'll do the exact opposite of "over-acting." i can see her bringing this dead pan kind of honesty to the role that will certainly be a change from the whiny showgirl approach adelaide seems to be given in every other production. ever. des did state that the show was about the two relationships. i have a feeling that this production is going to stray from the characitures commonly associated with guys and dolls and look at it through a very...for lack of a better word, "human" lens

Here is Faith Prince performing "A Bushel and a Peck" on THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO from the 1992 Broadway revival of GUYS & DOLLS, featuring Christopher Chadman's sensational choreography.

I cannot wait to see this!!!!!! Thanks for posting the video and the first look at the cast. They look amazing!!!! Huge Lauren Graham and Oliver Platt fan so I am looking forward to seeing them. Have heard lots of good things about Kate and Craig so I'm sure they will be wonderful as well.

But I was really psyched to hear the Mary Testa and Titus Burgess are also in this....yeah!!!!!

I've never minded it because I always thought she was supposed to sound like that because of the "cold" that's she's developed.

We did a regional production of the show, and our Adelaide played the cold angle through the entire show, so I'm more used to hearing Adelaide all nasally. I guess it works in the context when seeing the entire show live, but I guess I can see your point of it sounding a little annoying when just listening to the cast album.

I personally loved the Adelaide in the 1994 studio cast recoridng. Vocally, that is.

"Go 'head... you know, wikipedia it."
"the had a pianist and a drummer playing live for me. And it's just.. well, not for me they do it for everyone."

bahaha. i just love her.

Lauren Graham looks utterly fabulous in the costume. I think this is shaping up to be much more exciting than I had originally hoped for.

"He bought me the fur thing five winters ago
And the gown the falling fall.
Then the necklace, the bag, the gloves, and the hat-
That was late FORTY-EIGHT, I recall."

So the year 1948 has passed, according to Adelaide.

Of course, the lyric was changed for the film...

re: Guys & Dolls photoshoot

The show was set in the 50s. A close examination of the original production photos show Broadway versions of quasi-contemporary clothing. But since most of the base material was written much earlier, the stories are set in the 30s. Personally I think this is a great idea. Either way, at least they haven't gone into Neverland, like West Side Story has.
