"So, if he wants to tweak it, who better?"
I agree. I appreciate the fact that Laurents is the one to tinker with it.
It seems that in recent revivals the book is often heavily altered/re-arranged ... and not by the people that wrote it (because they are often dead). I always wonder how they'd feel about their work being altered ... but being dead, perhaps they have bigger fish to fry ...

Laurents is an old, old man. A different person from when he wrote it. Out of touch with today's audiences, I don't see how just because he wrote it, he's more well-equipped to change it than say, someone with a broader knowledge of today's musical theater and someone who has a respectful, but fresh look at it.
In fact, I think he's too close to the material.

People need to CHILL OUT. Calm down. This is the PREVIEW period. Laurents could surely restore the original line by the time the show opens.

WWMD? (What would Merman do?)
(Astoria accent): Listen Arthur. Just call me Miss Birdseye because this show is frozen!

Or maybe the thought of Lupone stripping is an unpleasant image that he doesn't want the audience to have stuck in their heads?
well I certainly wouldn't mind Patti stripping.
obviously you've never seen Summer of Sam. her body is quite nice, actually.
I'm curious to see how the line works for myself, because I was a big fan of "from the way that dame walks..."

I loved that line...Oh well. At least the original writer changed it.
I have to ask, are we sure it's a line cut? Or, did someone just go up on a line?

But Rose, there's no reason in the script that she's so insane, and unaware or uninterested in her children's emotional well-being.
Umm..Have you read the script? Seen the show? Scene two: Pop says to Rose "And you'll leave them (the kids) the way your mother left you." That one line tells you a lot. SO does Rose's comment near the end "I was born too soon and started too late." Arthur Laurents’ script is amazing in its tightness...cut one line in a scene and a line in a later scene loses some resonance.
I realize a generation raised on POTO pabulum ("slowly, gently, night unfurls her splendor...") might have trouble listening to every line of dialogue and every lyric, but if you pay attention to GYPSY every action is motivated.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Posted: 3/6/08 at 7:34amYou beat me to the punch, FRC2. That is exactly where I was going with my post. Just one thing to add: Insane? I would never classify Rose as "insane." Very poor choice of a word.

I've been thinking about it and I believe the exchanee went
Tessie"Who does she think she is?"
Louise(defensively" That's my mother!
Tessie "That's your MOthah!?"
I thought it was funny.

No.... I saw the show again last night, it's...
Rose: "God knows what else the girls have in the other dressing room with them.." (walks out)
Tessie: "She's your mother?"
Louise: "Yes. She's my mother."
I actually like it a lot now.

Posted: 3/8/08 at 4:29pmMy love for LuPone is well documented here. However, this great lady doesn't walk like a stripper. When Lansbury played the part, she had enormous grace when she walked. Tessie Tura's line got a great laugh as a reult. I've seen LuPpne play the part 5ive times now and think the new line probably works better.

I guess she ought to for this role. It's sad when the author has to change a line because the actor isn't up to the role
But, then, we all know she always plays herself :)
