I'm sorry, but it deserved it's own thread.
Many, many theatre-goers have hailed the value, no, NEED, for the current Broadway revival of "Gypsy." And yet, there have been countless slams and bitter diatribes about why "Gypsy" again? Why "Gypsy" now? Why "Gypsy" with Patti LuPone?
Because of the ideal cast found in Ms. LuPone, Ms. Benanti, Mr. Gaines, Ms. Larkin, and Mr. Yazbeck under the superb direction of Mr. Laurents. That's why.
The critics have weighed in the production has not only been embraced, but adored. Mr. Brantley has written an all out rave and love letter to the production, the ENTIRE cast, and the director. Feel free to read his thoughts here:

Welcome, "Gypsy"! It sure as hell wasn't too soon!
I can't wait to see how the sales pick up after this!
GYPSY's a pretty girl, momma!!
I knew, when I saw GYPSY last summer at CC,that I was watching musical theatre history in the making. I have never seen a show so perfectly cast. I couldn't find a weakness in the entire production. Even the sets gave just the right feel for that time and the seediness of some of the theatres. I was not a particular fan of Ms. LuPone, then. Well.......... that has changed big time. When I read Brantley's review, it brought me to tears. I am so pleased for everyone connected with the show, and so glad that I got to see it in its infancy. Thanks for letting me ramble on.
