I heard someone say he was going at 4 AM. I don't know if that's what other people are doing. Most heard 7, I think.
And, I don't really know if I would say HAIR has a type. They seem to pride themselves (at least from casting notices I've read) of casting people of all shapes, sizes, and races. Whether that will hold true tomorrow, though, I have NO idea.

It seems like they are looking to cast really young, so if they type out, it would probably be those that are or look older.
If only this call were last week...

Check out @HairTribe on Twitter, there are a few good stories on there- including there are apparently people on line who flew in from L.A. just to attend the open call.
NY1 story says first person on line got there at 1am.

I went with a friend. We got there around 6. Some guy was walking up the line and told the area I was in that we were in the 500s. The rumor was that they were only going to see 500 people. Once I got closer to the doors, a guy came out and said we could either A. Get on a standby list to sing with an accompanist or B. Get a time slot, but would have to sing a cappella. Once inside, and in a line to get an a cappella time slot, a monitor came out and said 'I need 4 people from this line to go in and sing NOW" I quickly raised my hand, and was rushed into the room after filling out an index card. I guess they had some open slots all of a sudden. I was extremely lucky. I got seen before 11, and didn't have to get there by 2.
It was cold, and miserable, but fantastic fun. I made friends with the people around me, told stories, laughed, and even got on Channel 4 news. I would do it again in a heart beat.

Wish I'd known about this sooner as well for my daughter, although there would be no chance in hell we would have been able to get down there early enough to make it worthwhile, especially if they cut off the line at 9 am.
If they were casting to physical type, she would be perfect. I tell her she's a hippie born 25 years too late all the time.
She did the open call for "Spring Awakening" a few years back and was in the mid-700's after arriving around 10:30 am. She didn't get seen until after 5 pm.

I got there at 5 AM and was #264. I was shocked to see that many people there. I mean, there were at least 300 before 5:30. That's insane. What an absolutely freezing day to do this. O what we do for the love of the theatre...

Total publicity stunt.
Seems the news cameras HAD to be there, right?

Broadway.com filmed all the auditions unless you told them you didn't want to be recorded.

I felt so embarrased for the girl who sang "Respect", what was she doing with her hair? So unecessary.

Posted: 1/24/10 at 8:52pmDon't people know you almost never sing a song from the show on an open call? It's all about being different and allowing the casting directors hear something they haven't been listening to for the last three years. And also so you won't be compared to the 500 people who also sang I Got Life. (goes for classics like On My Own from Les Mis and Luck Be A Lady from Guys and Dolls as well)

Posted: 1/24/10 at 10:00pmIt was kind of ridiculous that they asked people what parts they would accept. Any non-equity actor would have to be incredibly stupid to turn down a part in a Broadway show.

I sang from the show because it showed range and hippie craziness, and the song I picked was a complete song at 16 bars. They did suggest singing from the show, so it's not a crime to do that. People sing from the show at Equity auditions all the time. I did not sing "I Got Life" though... I sang "Sodomy," and I made it on that video. That's me at 0:56 singing the word "fellatio"!

I was never asked about being filmed, and from what I remembered I wasn't.
As far as the "publicity stunt" theory goes, they had callbacks yesterday. No cameras were present. I was lucky enough to get one myself (and I sang a song from the show).
