Posted: 6/14/05 at 11:10amAccording to the upcoming CDs listing, its available in stores today, but I'm not 100% sure. Try calling around to the stores in your area (I know that it won't be in my area, it may be in the city).

Posted: 6/14/05 at 11:34amDon't most or all of the proceeds go to GMHC? I imagine Amazon wouldn't sell it, if that was the case. I'd say Sh-K-boom is the most reliable place to get it.

Hair is in stores as of TUESDAY! I actually heard Seth talking about it on Sirius last night, saying he's in the midst of picking a show for this years concert already. He said people had suggested "Barnum" but that he didn't want to bore the audience to death.
Bitchy bitchy bitchy....

I bought it today. I have to say, of what I have heard, I find it neither awesome nor amazing.
And it's weird, because I LOVE the score. Have bought and rebought the original every time they repackage it with extras and bonii.
So why doesn't this recording click for me?
There are performers I love whose performances on this I don't. Lilias White's Aquarius, for example. Why does it plod? Did they slow it down or were people just stoned?
Dead End. Love the song. Adore Ana Gasteyer. Not crazy at all about her rendition of the song.
Then there are people I remember who got slammed the day after the concert. Lea Delaria, for instance. I think her version of Donna is terrific, and having a lesbian sing it really upends the sexism.
Then there is a more quizzical category. Shoshana Bean. What more can be said of her performance of "I Believe in Love" but that it proves the theory of quantum physics? Apparently, Ms. Bean went back in time to the 1960s and brought the horrible late-'90s/early-'00s melisma trend of adding notes within notes within notes to notes that were perfect the way they were.
Thanks, Soshana, for ripping a hole in the time/space continuum and poisoning a perfectly delightful period piece with THE most annoying bad habit of showboating singers today! I wonder if my A Chorus Line recording now has Sheila singing "Up the steep and narrow stay-yaha-hai-haiir-hair-yayayayaya-yairwayyyyyyuh" now that Shoshana has altered history?

My biggest complaint about the CD was that a lot of the songs were significantly slowed down from how they were at the concert.
Hair and Aquarius are bordering the territory of painfully slow. I do really like it, though, simply because there are such fantastic voices. I've had it for a few months, but it also doesn't have the cohesion of a true cast recording.
ETA - someone mentioned Barnum as a possibility for next year. I know very little about it, but Raúl did a kick-ass version of one of the songs Monday night!

They slowed them down? *crosses new Hair CD off list of 'to buy'* That's a surefire way to kill a cast recording. And I can't stand the idea of hearing HAIR 90s-popified. GAH. It's a kickass score and period commentary and I don't want them to change a thing. Do they modernize the orchestrations? That'd be the worst. I love all the beauty, spendor and wonder of Hair's bad-sixties-recording-technology and tinny guitars.
And can anyone ever REALLY duplicate the original Flesh Failures? I think not. Change is bad. Very bad.

Noooo, buy it. They only slowed some of the songs down. With a few exceptions, everybody gave powerhouse vocal performances on that CD. Adam quite possibly sounds the best I've ever heard him record.
And Norm's Flesh Failures is stunning. I love him.

There will never be, never has been and never is a better Flesh Failures than the original. Its haunting power comes from how real the fear expressed in the song was at the time of the recording. It was something that could and did happen. I don't know if that emotion can be so truly recaptured, even by the best actor.
As a teenager with typical teen funds, Emcee, I don't buy any CD I'm not sure I'll love. Pass. Don't chop up my Adam fangirl card. I'd have no home here.
