re: HAIRSPRAY Happy Mondays

I guess they must do, Monday nights seem to be permanately on offer. Get so many deals through for about £40 on Monday nights. Does make you wonder whether its the show or the star thats selling it at the moment.

re: HAIRSPRAY Happy Mondays

You'd be surprised how sales are effected by a star not performing certain nights. The very same thing happened with him when he started taking Weds eve out dring 'Aspects Of Love'. The decision was made after the show begame a hit so thee for refunds had to be given to those booked well in advance- this was before he became international.
When Hugh Jackman in 'The Boy From Oz' took holidays or couldn't perform certain nights, then the theatre wet dark as nobody would see the show without him.
Its been awhile now since Michael Ball performed on Mondays.
*** nowhere on that website do they tell purchasers that Michael Ball will not be performing!

I do think the real test of a show is if it needs a 'name' to survive. When you look at Phantom, Les Mis or Wicked for example (whether you like them or not), they survive without any names.

Hairspray survived for six years in New York, and while a number of C-grade celebs have been brought in over the last year or two, the show has proven both in New York and on tour that it is strong enough to survive without stunt casting (though I still hold out hope that Harvey can come over for six months after closing New York...)

re: HAIRSPRAY Happy Mondays

It would be amazing if he could play London if only for a 6 month season. Him going back to the show proves that he can still do it and is a major draw. Even after such a different performance from Michael Ball London audiences would flock to see the original Broadway star.
The buzz about him being back there was amazing last week with everyone I met mentioning it. I would have gone to see it but my schedule was full and I'm happy with everything I actually saw.
He looks different on the new flier but still gorgeous!

It can be quiet mid week when Ball is on.
Not been when he's been off since last Xmas when it was full anyway.
Harvey would be a fantastic replacement for a few months when he leaves, it will be in need of a boost.

re: HAIRSPRAY Happy Mondays

Ive personally never been a fan of Harvey on the cast recording, but friends in NYC say when you actually see him live he is brilliant.

Sadly though I dont think he would boost audience numbers as he isnt a name here, outside the theatre community.

Thats correct, the recording is nothing special for his parts and doesn't bear repeat listening but the rest of its very Grammy worthy. his live performance really is amazing BUT I will put Michael Ball way above him in all aspects, acting, singing etc.

"Ive personally never been a fan of Harvey on the cast recording"

Me niether. MB has genuine affection for Edna whereas HF sounds like a caricature. I think this is one of the reasons why I didn't expect to enjoy Hairspray and it then took me completely by surprise (it's nice when that happens).
