A friend saw it last night. Said it was really interesting to see another varsion of the show. Takes some adjusting but then really had a blast. She was really wowed as how much the story actually comes out in the round. I guess the Maybelle, Seaweed, Inez intergration story line has weight and meaning all thru the show rather than just emerging in I KNOW WHERE I'VE BEEN. Also enjoyed how they handled some things in the round like the finale can and such. Said I would love it... will let you know next week. Also said the B-roll is just OK compared to how good the show is onstage.

yeah, i have a feeling they are much more energized in the SHOW since this was filmed with NO audience and during a 10 of 12 day....
I should be going the weekend of the 11th/12th

Paul's "I have no idea," cracked me up! I can see a lil Edna Garrett in his Edna Turnblad.
Birdie was just not there for me in that vid.
Is there a shortage on chubby girls? 'Coz I like when Hairspray uses girls who eat.
Looks fun though. I hope it's successful.

Posted: 10/26/06 at 10:14pmAfter viewing the video, it just lacked something. "Hairspray" just really needs to big, bold, and bright, and while the coloring of the video is off, it just seems like it's not bright enough. To me, it seemed like it was thrown together rather quickly. But all I've seen is the video and the pictures, so until I see it for myself, I can't really judge it! I'm sure if I saw it live, I'd appreciate it much more!

It's always hard to see a show we know so well being done in such a drastically different manner.
That being said, it looked wonderful, though the woman playing Tracy came across as too old.
That being said, it shows how solidly constructed the show is that it can live in the round.
That being said, I still love the show at the Alvin.
That being said, it's now the Simon, isn't it?

Posted: 10/27/06 at 1:21amI love "Hairspray"! Seeing this video made me want to see the show again. I've seen it many times on Broadway and on tour and it has never dissapointed me.

I enjoy the pictures, but the video doesn't impress me.
at all.

Posted: 10/27/06 at 7:26amI agree with you, the video did nothing for me either. I did not like Edna either, but I think having seen Harvey perform it, I am spoiled and no one else will do the role justice.

First of all the video has been very poorly edited. It makes the show look very dark which it is not. Also like everyone has said this was shot during tech after we all were working 14 hour days trying to pull this show together.
As far as Paul and Bridie they are both great in the show. Bridie is certainly not to old and everyone should give her a chance. She brings a ton of energy to the show every night. Along with many other very talented people whom many of have done the tour. Paul is his own Edna not a copy of anyone,he has such great comedic timing and stage presence.
I have worked on the show before in Boston and this show definatly is worth seeing because it is not a copy of the tour or NYC it is its own version. There ARE scenic elements and the shows moves along nicely in the round. There is always something to look at.
So I am urging you all to come see the show. I am part of it every night and am proud to be working on this show.

Here is my thought about the video. I know it was taken at a tech so I am sure the performances have become magical in front of an audience. However, the lighting looks really bad at points. That leads me to belive that whoever was editng the video was probably limited by that. And shooting video in the round must be another challenge I dont even want to think about! The video is good enough for me and I am just glad they are doing this for shows. More theatres should do this. I am sure it helps to sell tickets.
I am seeing the show next week and can not wait. When do the reviews come out?

Congrats Makanthony22.
But your Tracy DOES look too old. If the post about her being 24 is correct, then she IS too old. Tracy is supposed to be 16.

um, TD90016, you know I love ya, but you also KNOW that MJW was past 30 years old most of the time she played Tracy on Braodway and in LA, so. perhaps you should not make your point based on the actress' actual age!!

Posted: 10/27/06 at 3:24pmMarc it is so great for you and co. to let NSMT do this show. I have now heard 2 great reviews of it from friends. I am so excited to see it. Is anyone from the HAIRSPRAY creative camp seeing it?

Yes Marc, you are right on about MJW, but she was surrounded by people who were close to her age as well, so it played. In the North Shore pics, she just looks older than the rest of the "kids".
I hope you are well!

"It justs looks like there's not energy...it looks a little unprofessional, even with the costumes."
Yeah I felt the same way, but again that is based on the video. I remember feeling more energy during the finale dance when I saw the show, but watching the video made me feel as if they were bored. Same with the "Run and Tell That" scene...I didn't feel any energy from Seaweed. I know it's only a poorly edited video, but that's how I felt.

Posted: 10/28/06 at 5:06pmMaybe I'm just used to the Broadway version, but wow...I didn't really like that at all. I guess it's different with the set/stage, but I thought the cast lacked energy and that's one thing Hairspray should be all about. Maybe it's better in front of a live audience though...
