Hello, call me Prince.
I'm dreadfully sorry if this is in the wrong category, I have no idea where to post this really.
So here's my situation, ever since middle school I have loved the book "Lolita", in fact it is one of my all-time favorite books and actually I love many of Vladimir Nobakovs' works.
I have read Lolita several times and seen some of the Lolita movie adaptations. I love musicals with a passion so imagine my delight when I found out that there was a musical adaptation of Lolita!! I soon was disheartened to find that it stopped showing in 1971. I did find some of the songs however and I absolutely adore the music of "Lolita, My Love" the musical.
I desperately want to find and read the script. I know the history of the musical, I read every source I could find, and I don't need the score, I've listened to it, All i need is the script which I cant seem to find anywhere online!!
It doesn't have to be downloadable, just complete. Please please help me find and read that script, even a small part of it would be helpful.
Thankyou so much,
Prince
Isn't that the show about a pedophile?
The research collection at the NY Public Library appears to have an early draft of the first act but you need to go to the library to read it: https://catalog.nypl.org/search~S1?/tLolita+my+love/tlolita+my+love/1%2C4%2C5%2CB/frameset&FF=tlolita+my+love&1%2C%2C2
It also indicates that there are full copies of the script in the Dorothy Loudon Papers, which you would also have to view onsite. There appear to be three different scripts in there. Her papers were catalogued just recently and there's a lot of great stuff.
Good luck! I love deep archival dives.

And Carolee!
Here's a thread from 6 years ago, started by someone who seems to have transcribed the script from unofficial recordings, then made his own adaptation. Try contacting him.

In short, yes but in long terms the story is about a man that is so traumatized by the death of his love at a young age that he becomes infatuated with a young girl that reminds him of her like no woman has ever been able to do. He marries her repulsive mother in order to get closer to her and when her mother dies he takes the girl all around the country. They end up getting a physical relationship where the girl bribes him with her body to get whatever she wants and he becomes more protective and possessive over her. After some time she runs away with the leader of a child prostitution ring and falls in love with him. Humbert finds this man and shoots him, wishing Lolita a happy life with her soon-to-be-born child.

Georgeanddot,
Lovely idea!! Oh i really do wish that we could bring this musical back, I would try to find a way to buy rights to it if I had the script or the company that owns Lolita, my love.
Alan Lerner AND John Barry died so the only other place i could think to look to for the rights to anything Lolita related is the Nobakov family. Vladimir's son Dmitri is sadly also dead as is his father and he died being a lifelong bachelor with no children. I would love to find the company or person that owns the rights because I would at least try to bring it back as a community theater production but sadly I cant find anything. If you can figure out the company I would truly appreciate it.

Newintown,
I appreciate your contribution to my effort to find the script, thank you
The Scribd link in the thread newintown gave you doesn't work anymore, but I have that script if you'd like to read it, bearing in mind that it is an adaptation and not so much the real thing. PM me.

It might be worth contacting MTI, since they control the rights to several other Lerner shows. While they don't have Lolita, My Love listed, they may be able to put you in touch with whoever is currently in control of Lerner's estate.
I suggested ASCAP and or BMI in another thread, but someone at MTI could definitely point you in the direction of the Lerner estate. They might even have information about why the show (presumably according to Broadway heresay) will never be licensed or performed again.

Oxford University Press next year is publishing a volume of the complete lyrics of Alan Jay Lerner. One of the editors is Dominic McHugh, who edited a volume of Lerner's letters a few years ago that was also published by Oxford. Try them.

Never having seen the show, I've always been fond of the score, very fond. I would love to have seen it. I talked to Dorothy Loudon about it many times, and we recorded two songs from it for the Brent Barrett Lerner CD. And then I called Liza Lerner and we talked about recording the entire score, which she was absolutely for and gave me her blessing. Then someone butted it, got in the way, going directly to composer John Barry and so muddying the waters that it became impossible to do - of course, the promises made to Barry by this fellow never happened and then it was simply too late. I'd cast Humbert already and had talked to Dorothy about doing Charlotte, but she was not in good shape then, so I had a few other ideas for that. It's a big regret for me.
Very interesting story, BK. I wonder who you Humbert was.
I do think it's a great score and should be recorded. That's a shame.

This is an extremely fascinating story!! It is very sad that someone got in the way of that.. That would have been wonderful. What Ive heard from the show, (some songs I simply cannot find sadly) Is wonderful and it would have been very enjoyable to listen to them recorded. I would have been so crushed if I was in that situation. I am glad that another person enjoys the score as well!! I would have loved seeing the show myself.
