Just by chance looking at the HMV website, started to scroll through their Cast Recording section and it's bloody good! They've got a wide range of old shows, new shows, London Casts, Broadway Casts, Originals and Revivals...and most under a tenner (and free delivery in the UK!). They have the Hair Revival on pre-order as well as new shows like Shrek etc. Just thought i'd let you all know, seems to work out a bit cheaper the DC.. :) happy shopping!
BUT if you can do it at the shop itself it will keep it open. Online shopping has killed the local shop. Times Sq in New York now has a huge void on one block now that Virgin Megastore has closed!
HMV trocedero has always had a good MT display with tonnes of soundtracks and dvds. More local stores dont have as good a selection. But you can always order something in.
The HMV in Southampton used to be pretty good. There was Sound Tracks, World Music etc... in the basement so pretty quiet and a good selection. Now all the music is in the basement so it is busier and much less selection.
One thing that bugs me with HMV is that the original Hairspray DVD is always in the musical section. That must have caught out so many people.
I actually think that they don't care about the difference between soundtrack and stage shows. 99% off shops around the world have them mixed -takes twice as bloody long to browse thru!
you Said it CONAries ! thank you for replying before i did ! hehe yes it was huge ! they even had Barnum ! the next post from CONAries will consist of something like " what is it with you and barnum"
I was going to order it directly from Shk boom (who have the best customer service in the world), but with the £/$ exchange and postage costs, £8.99 is way cheaper!
Mama - I mean the DVD of the original movie which is in no way a musical. I know they put soundtracks and cast recordings together (and that is fine by me).
Conaries - I guess I haven't really looked at soundtracks since the change, I just figured that moving 2 floors worth of stock into one smaller floor must mean less selection.
I've pre-ordered Hair, it's soo cheap..i'm thinking about ordering Next to Normal as well, i can't remember the exact price, but it was less than £12 including postage...which is v.good!
The reason i made the post was because the two HMV stores i use Bluewater and Covent Garden have quite good sections, but nothing spectacular...the website is a hell of a lot better, and with prices the same as iTunes, i'll use it a lot more, seeing as it is a lot nicer to have the case and artwork etc..!
The fact that Virgin Megastore closed was not necessarily an awful thing. Yes, they had a good selection, but it was mostly overpriced (unless you were buying a CD for Wicked, Jersey Boys or Mamma Mia) and the store wasn't maintained in the least. It blared hip-hop music throughout at deafening levels, the toilets were atrocious, nothing was stocked in the correct place, and customer assistance was non-existent. What was once a charming regular stop on my trips in the 90s (especially when it had a full-service cafe) turned into a rancid eyesore by the new millennium. It will not be missed in the least. The Chicago store wasn't much better.

Matt, I agree with you on all points above. It was a dirty, stinking, unkept hole of a place but it got rid of a few hours on a non-matinee day in New York (thats every day except Wednesday!!!!) I was at a loss last week and its weird as the red neon sign onto Times Square is still lit up! It was like a magnet , i thought hey had opened up again just for me!
My CD collection is similar to the one above but I have around 3000 CDs clinging to 3 walls in a spare room. That collection is being transported to Spain 2mrw -don't talk to me about travel insurance!
