HOMOPHOBIA IN THE THEATRE.

Tonight, I saw this couple storm out of Spring Awakening when the two boys have their love scene. It was shocking.
Has anyone seen that at the show?

The husband got really offended and jumped out of his seat. The wife did not seem to want to go and stayed a few minutes and then left with him.

It was upsetting to say the least.

The other upsetting thing is the Eugene O'Neill does not have a handicapped bathroom. The bathroom is down a very large staircase. That is really dumb. The owners of that theater need to build a bathroom for people who can't walk stairs. (vent)

re: HOMOPHOBIA IN THE THEATRE.

The ushers at The Eugene O'Neill are very nice. One even held my bag when I got out of my wheelchair.

I just wished they had a bathroom on the same level as the theatre.
I mean I did not see URINETOWN, and it seems like discrimination when it is a priviledge to pee.

re: HOMOPHOBIA IN THE THEATRE.

Well, not exactly the same type of theatre, but a couple walked out of Brideshead Revisited for the exact same reason. And I have a musical collage as my comp wallpaper and one of the pics is Jason and Peter from Bare, and guys always get really grossed out when they see it. I just don't understand! Especially when they have no problems with two girls!

Well, it's just not something people are accustomed to. People fear what they don't understand. Once it's more widely accepted, I think it won't be such a shocker. Just imagine when we're all grown-up and have children, and teach them it's not wrong and it's not a choice. Some people are just ignorant and that's all that can be said.

re: HOMOPHOBIA IN THE THEATRE.

People leave the show if something offends them, happens all of the time.

What's so shocking about that?

If they aren't enjoying themselves, they should leave.

re: HOMOPHOBIA IN THE THEATRE.

So the sex, rape, repeated beatings and suicide are all okay, but two gays kissing, not even with tongue, and there's a problem? Sounds like "Grey's Anatomy."

re: HOMOPHOBIA IN THE THEATRE.

well I actually thought the scene in Spring Awakening between the 2 boys was homophobic. I thought it speaks volumes that they chose to turn what could have been a beautiful love scene into comic relief. As a gay male...I was offended.

re: HOMOPHOBIA IN THE THEATRE.

Is there any profession gayer than theatre? It is surprising to see homophobia to say the least, IMO (although I suppose it was just a touristy Audience?)

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

re: HOMOPHOBIA IN THE THEATRE.

When I saw The Color Purple the audience booed and yelled "sin", "nasty" "abomination!" when Celie and Shug kiss. It was just plain stupid. No one got up and left though, but the audience was rolling their eyes during anything dealing with Celie loving Shug during act 2.

Which goes to show that few people read anymore. If they had read the book "The Color Purple," they would have known Spielberg "Shug"er coated the love written about in the book.

"Well, not exactly the same type of theatre, but a couple walked out of Brideshead Revisited for the exact same reason. "

Or maybe they were hardcore fans of the book who objected to the new movie messing up the story and having an on screen (as oppose to maybe guessed at) gay kiss anyway re: HOMOPHOBIA IN THE THEATRE.

But yeah--it's disappointing to think anyone willing to go to Spring Awaekning would be put off by that--especially relatively late in the show when you think it might have won them over

re: HOMOPHOBIA IN THE THEATRE.

I suppose I house managed for far too long, but this sort of thing doesn't surprise me in the least. I used to take bets with some cast members about the number of walk-outs, and at what point they would leave. I'd say this couple had no idea what the show was about but heard it was good and won awards, so decided to go see it and were genuinely shocked. From my experience, people like that are sort of okay with a gay storyline, but once it turns to a love scene, that is when they get offended.

People can be jerks, especially tourists who don't know anything about the show they're seeing, but I guess that's what Wicked is for.

Well if they have enough of these 'shocking' incidents they'll eventually get the idea that THEY are the ones who are out of kilter with the rest of the world. Of course they'll probably be 98 years old by then, but still...

re: HOMOPHOBIA IN THE THEATRE.

Maybe they thought Springtime of Hitler was on after that song and decided to beat the crowd of people that would be walking out???
I once heard someone describe her (Ruthie Henshall) singing as sounding as though she's trying to swallow a whole meatball slightly larger than her windpipe. (The same person compared Michael Ball's singing to sounding as though he's sitting on a washing machine on spin cycle and Colm Wilkinson's to a man with a paralyzed lip trying to eat cottage cheese.) --- Schmerg_The_Impaler

re: HOMOPHOBIA IN THE THEATRE.

I was surprised last summer at "Mama Mia" when a some middle aged husbands groaned at the realization that Harry Headbanger was actually a gay man and the other half he was referring to throughout the show was his same sex partner.

So...wait.

Seeing two guys kiss makes the husband have to pee?

re: HOMOPHOBIA IN THE THEATRE.

I watched "Judy & Me" a few weeks ago. During one scene where two guys kiss, an old gentleman in the audience stands up and starts looking around the theatre for his wife. He finally spots her on the other side of the room (not sure why they were separated in the first place). He goes up to her and says (loud enough for all to hear), "I cannot stand these goddam queers! Let's go!" He leaves the room while his wife stays behind.

Sure, hairdressing and fashion!

re: HOMOPHOBIA IN THE THEATRE.

Was counting down til someone mentioned the "Judy incident".. Is that actually what the guy said, lyric? The article in the NYBlade that we were directed to by some of the Judy team a few days ago had a somewhat different account of the "event"..

The wife last night was also reportedly wearing a fur coat!

re: HOMOPHOBIA IN THE THEATRE.

I did read the NY Blade article, but I thought it might have been a separate incident. During my show, I don't recall the guy saying the "F" word. Also, audience members didn't start leaving after the incident.
