Was he not considered for the movie.......I think he would have been great.
How old is Hugh anyway....he looks young.
He's in his early forties and many other people agree with you that he should have done the movie...I certainly do
He looks so young! I can believe he's in his forties!
he's a hottie
who was he gonna play?
I KNOW, RIGHT? HUGH would have been great as the Phantom!
He was born in 1964...He's 40 years old!

SallyBrown, have you ever seen hugh???
I have!! I have!!
actually no I havent
so I should shut up I know
Yeah, I was kinda thinking about that last night while watching the movie. If Schumacher was going to go with an unknown in the lead and wanted someone great looking who could also sing the hell out of the score, why not Panaro? He IS 40, but doesn't look it at all.

No, you shouldn't. Say what you think.

They went with Gerard because Andrew wanted a rock sounding voice. It worked.

Gerard is a young sexy presence, and his rock sound was kinda interesting, I think. But he suffers when he has to produce a more legit sound.

Maybe Gerard's "rock sound" (or just bad singing and no technique or control masquerading as "rock sound") would have been more effective had Phantom been a "rock musical." However, it is not. Wouldn't that be funny if it was though? Christine screeching out those arias Brooklyn-style?...That would be "young and sexy" - surprised Joel didn't go for that.
Anyone remember those early early promo music videos of Phantom that Webber put together as a kind of audition for different actors in the role of the Phantom? Remember the Steve Harvey one? That one was "rock" and a disaster...Why does Webber have some crazy obsession with this "rock" idea that doesn't serve the peice??
Isn't Gerard supposed to be this big star in England?
Anyway I heart Hugh.
will hugh still be there in april??i saw him last march, and really wanna see him again when i go to see it!
As of now (according to his website) there is no date for him leaving the show.
Joel Shumacher was quite insistent on having a young cast from what I understand.

When I saw 'Phantom' on Broadway last October, I was totally disappointed by the show. In fact, I hated it with a living passion. The ONLY redeeming quality I could pull from it was Hugh. He was AMAZING! He was gorgeous! He was totally cute when I saw him after the show.
When I read this topic, I hadn't even thought about why Hugh wasn't in the movie. And now that I think about it...haha...truly, why wasn't he?! Gerard is obviously not a vocalist, so he seemed to try to cover his voice up with a character voice: a voice of a disfigured man (with no vibrato). But I thought that the 'phantom has the voice of an angel, and only his face is disfigured'. Kinda funny.
And as far as the "youth" of the film's cast...Gerard Butler is 35 to Hugh Panaro's 40. Not such a big difference.
i thought Hugh was AMAZING... i kept reading so much about him... i was so excited to finally see him in person... WELL worth it!
and birdboy, i remember those videos... they were quite scary... i think Gerard was A LOT better than Steve Harvey... no question about that :P!!
Hugh is beautiful and amazing and...*loses train of thought at the rememberance of his PONR*
What was I saying?
