Can I go so far as to say, I've seen Phantom twice. Once with Crawford, and once with Panaro. And I preferred Panaro. His youth works for him, and I think he has a richer, less reedy voice than Crawford.

Ahhh yes... Hugh would have been great in the POTO movie. Although he's 5 years older than Gerry, Hugh looks like he's 26. I guess he's blessed with great genes.
I'm guessing that one reason why he couldn't do the movie because his contract on Broadway would have hindered things. Shooting the movie in London and then doing 8 performances a week would have been difficult.
Oh well... At least he's still in Broadway's POTO for those of you who prefer a Phantom with legit singing. IMO, Gerry didn't do too shabby a job in the movie...at least he's not too bad to look at! :)

Hugh did not get to play the Phantom because Gerard is way hotter...

Gerry is way hotter...
Debatable... but it still goes against all common sense that POTO represents. Oh well, that's Hollywood for you. The LA Times didn't call Gerry "GQ of the Opera" for nothing.

I saw the POTO movie last Sunday and then saw Hugh perform at the Kennedy Center last night. Hugh made me actually like the "Music of the Night" and "Phantom of the Opera", which is saying something.
I've seen Hugh 3 times on Broadway....I WANT TO SEE HIM AGAIN!
But I still think Gerry is hotter.
If you noticed the three leads in the film have all made films. That is the main reason no theatre Phantom was picked. Another reason is that they get into doing the show one way and Joel and Andrew were looking for a different characterization of the Phantom and the other two leads.
If you asked the average movie-goer they would not know who Hugh Parano was. But if you said Gerard Butler who was just in Lora Croft Tomb raider is in the film, then they would more want to see the film.
People forget they are trying to get in mainstream movie goers not theatre people into the film. Putting in unknown actors that have done some films. Patrick just did The Alamo.
These are more the reasons they did not pick theatre people.
O.K. now you are going to go on about them not being able to sing. Well, I will tell you that you on this site may not like the film, but there are more positive reviews many film sites and fan sites. Also, Gerry had a fan base already established. Fans who had seen him in his films, there are many. Emmy and Patrick also have fan bases.
I mentioned to someone who played Christine in the film and she said oh she was great in a certain film. That person only knows the original cast since they have not seen the stage production since it first opened.
Some reasons for you to think over.
Yours,
Carolyn
