Well, to start off...as far as I know, the jail dress isn't "sparkly". However, they make the change while Amber is doing her Cooties dance for the Miss Teen. Hairspray.
re: Hairspray costume question#2
Posted: 7/17/05 at 11:54pmThe jail dress DID start off (way back in previews) sequined. It's hasn't been that way since before they officially opened in NY.

Byron is the man to ask costume questions.

And, you're right, I never did get to meet you. Damn.

Same thing. Most of the photos in that book were taken during the Seattle run before Broadway. There are quite a few differences between the book and what you are currently seeing on stage.
Sharp Eyes....
re: Hairspray costume question#9
Posted: 7/18/05 at 12:06amI noticed a few differences. One is that Tracy did not have her jail dress in Without Love in Seattle, but does now. I believe she had a lighter wig in Seattle too. There were also many different ensemble wigs in the finale.
re: Hairspray costume question#11
Posted: 7/18/05 at 12:16amByron!! Dear sweet Byron!! What the Hell was I thinking...I answered a costume question knowing that one as great as the being that is you was among us. Can you ever forgive me??? *bows down at your feet*. So sorry.

Sweetie, stop bowing, your knees are getting dirty.
All of the costumes and sets are made by the same companies in New York, so they will match.
The toughest job I think is the wig department. Those wigs get washed out once a week and completley re-styled. They carry huge "bibles" around with them showing pictures of how every single curler is rolled and in which direction. Their attention to detail is amazing.

Posted: 7/18/05 at 12:26amThank you Byron...my head feels so much heavier with that useful fact contained inside of it. Thank you thank you thank you...Wanna chocolate? *offers a heart shaped box of chocolates*

Oh! Godiva?
Thanks.
re: Hairspray costume question#15
Posted: 7/18/05 at 12:29amAh how I love Hairspray! The wigs are just so amazing, especially Amber's finale wig.
re: Hairspray costume question#16
Posted: 7/18/05 at 12:41amI DID notice that the Broadway wigs tended tobe larger, but I'm sure that's just because they don't have to haul them around in a roading box.
re: Hairspray costume question#17
Posted: 7/18/05 at 12:42amWho else here caught onto the (It's) Hairspray song, where he goes "Hey baby you look like you could use a stiff one!" and one of the girls wigs is shaped oh so peculiar-ly like a part of the male anatomy right in front of corny?
re: Hairspray costume question#18
Posted: 7/18/05 at 12:52amActually, I've seen a picture of the "Rocket Wig" and it was set in front of the "Mickey Mouse Ears" wig and it does look like and entire set of equiptment.

And here's the "sack"
re: Hairspray costume question#22
Posted: 7/18/05 at 1:07amWell, would you look at that!! Byron...have you hit the creamy fillin in the chocolate yet? I was scared to try it, I got it from Corny last time I was at the show. At the stage door Paul said to me "Here, you've been such a good lil Hairspray groupie. Take these". They were in an odd shape and I was scared to try it...

I KNOW everyone will hate me for this, but I'm going to correct a bit of SLIGHTLY incorrect info.
"All of the costumes and sets are made by the same companies in New York, so they will match."
Not entirely true, the Toronto costumes were made by "SEAMLESS COSTUMES". (A canadian company). They are pretty much identical to the Broadway and Natl Tour costumes, though. Some of you probably don't believe me, so here's a link to prove it.
