I saw The Band's Visit at the Kennedy Center tonight and at the end, a cast member came out and made a brief statement in honor of Hal Prince. I didn't realize he had helped develop that show too.

I was at the Shaw Festival production of Brigadoon tonight in Niagara-On-the-Lake and a cast member gave a very classy and heartfelt speech prior to the start of the show about Mr. Price and his legacy both to the theatre as a whole and to the cast of the show we were about to see. When I read the news this afternoon I was glad I had show tickets for tonight. Being able to celebrate his legacy at a show (any show) tonight was the proper way to honor him, at least for me.

RIP, had the pleasure of working with him many years ago. He really was some one so special. Regardless of what anyone thinks of Phantom, he’s direction and staging is still magnificent 33 years later.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Reading Prince's obituaries is a striking experience because unlike many of you, I hadn't focused on how many major musicals he was involved in as a producer or director. I only have seen two Harold Prince-directed shows (Phantom and the Showboat tour) but I've seen an awful lot of his musicals as revivals or in local productions without always realizing his connection. I didn't know She Loves Me (saw the first revival on my honeymoon in London) was directed by him, or that he produced both West Side Story and Fiddler on the RoofCabaret by itself is an extraordinary achievement that really did change the game on Broadway, and holds up remarkably well today.

The New York Times obit leans a bit heavily on an old Frank Rich critique, but it's worth checking out for the decade-old interview with him.

Joshua Kilimnik said: "Would reccommend a rewatch of the wonderful documentary Harold Prince - The Director's Life. I caught it on PBS a few months ago and opened my eyes to a lot of insight of his productions that I never would have thought about, redowloaded it just now to rewatch."

In case anyone wants to rewatch, Channel 13 is going to re-air this on Friday 8/2 at 10PM. I have no idea whether other PBS stations are doing the same, but it's worth checking your local station to see.

Thanks for the heads up! I found out it’s playing again here at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday so I set DVR to record. I watched it before, but looking forward to watching again.

The first two shows I saw on Broadway as a teen were COMPANY and FOLLIES. My first season working as a theater professional included working box office for the national tour of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC.

My husband was Prince's Associate Casting Director in the early 1980s--and has nary a negative word to say about the man personally even though it was a period of decline (and eventual closure) of Prince's office.

We are decking our house with black crepe. Broadway has been passed on to a younger generation.

Did Prince ever try to explain (or someone for him) why the movie version of "A Little Night Music" went so horribly wrong? So many bad choices. Although I haven't seen it in a while, I remember  the all-but-forgotten "Something for Everyone," his only other movie, being quite good and well received. Too bad it has disappeared.
