Interesting in seeing this. What did everyone think?
The Times review was pretty accurate. My husband and I each gave it a "B." We both thought the actress playing the teenage girl was excellent.

Harbor is a better-than-average play with good roles and strong scenes.
The two men and the daughter are characters that are pretty much what they seem, and they held no surprises at least for me.
The mother who is the sister of one of the men has a role that requires a some major character decisions by the actress. Is she uneducated or really not that bright? What is her motivation for the visit--is there a deliberate reason or is it serendiptious? This is the kind of role to rehearse all the many ways she could go in order to find what works for you, the actor. In other words, good actors would want to play her.
Alas, I don't think the play is strong enough to warrant many future productions, but boy, what a role for scene study.
Alright. Maybe I'll rush it. Does 59E59 do a rush?

Saw the play last night and really enjoyed it. It's well-written and some of the dialogue is really clever. Also, the characterizations are quite vivid. There's some wonderful ensemble acting and the last moments of the play lingered with me on the train ride home. Lots of food for thought.
A good play. It'll be interesting to see how many productions of HARBOR will pop up on Long Island in the near future.

Hm. I guess for $10 bucks you can't really say no.

I am friends with the actress playing the teenage girl, she is great. I haven't had the chance to see the show yet though.
My partner and I saw Harbor last weekend. It certainly was worth the $55 each we paid for the tickets. We found it witty, funny, sad and well acted. An enjoyable couple of hours of theatre.
I saw this show and REALLY enjoyed it. I thought it had some of the most clever dialogue I've heard in awhile. Don't make that out to mean that I think Chad Beguelin is Brecht but I found myself laughing throughout. Most gay plays are so sappy, cliched and expected but this I found to be very refreshing. The gays aren't shown to be untouchable saints. While I haven't found Beguelin's musical writing to be the best, I am definitely excited to see what he does next in plays.
The cast was really great all around but I was IN LOVE with Erin Cummings. She was probably my favorite character in the show but she was played with such depth that I loved her even outside of her amazing one-liners. Paul Anthony Stewart was second best for me (and not too bad to look at). Randy Harrison was good but there's something about the way he speaks that is a little off to me. Alexis Molnar was better than most child actresses.
The set is fairly simple but used in a very smart way to transform it to different areas. Something that shows like TOM DURNIN with a turntable and larger scale weren't able to do.
Is the play itself groundbreaking? No. It's certainly an enjoyable couple hours that stays with you after leaving the theatre. Definitely recommended.
