re: Harvey as Edna in Vegas

Wish he would come back to the role in New York after Bruce leaves to do his one man show.
I have to say, I love Bruce Vilanch. I think it would be amazing if Bruce played Wilbur and Harvey played Edna.
That would be a hilarious move.

Wow! I'm very surprised with this news. You think he would have been tired of the role...

re: Harvey as Edna in Vegas

Tired and bored is what the CURRENT generation of Broadway performers become. Like that Michelle Federer, if the thread about tired and bored actors is to be believed.

Harvey is one of the last of a dying breed of Old Pros. If he WERE to get tired and bored, the audience would be the last to know.

Oh no, but he just lost all that weight and once the beard is off he'll look soooo good!

Sorry, but that was the first thing I thought. I'd definitely make the drive to see him!

re: Harvey as Edna in Vegas

It's time for Mr. Fierstein to make some "Vegas dollars." They must have offered him a boat-load to do this. Atta boy!

Look out, Wayne Newton... Here comes Harvey!!

What a cool thing to see over my yogurt and chocolate-chip cookie.

We're moving to Vegas. Literally. This seriously could not be a better time...

I'm sure that, even in his wildest dreams, the Queen Bee of Brooklyn never envisaged this particular career move. I hope he has the time of his life.

Thank you, Rex Reed.

The dry desert air in Vegas has been known to damage vocal chords. I hope Harvey protects his beautiful instrument during the run.

re: Harvey as Edna in Vegas

I loved Vilanch in the role. I also adore Harvey in the role.
I could not stand the guy from Laverne and Shirley as Edna and I can't imagine Travolta as Edna either.
Vilanch is very funny and he has a better singing voice than Harvey.
There is something about Harvey's voice that just fits "Edna".
I admire both men and hope the film uses both of them.
Edna- Harvey
Wilbur- Bruce
Just my two cents.

re: Harvey as Edna in Vegas

Sorry, but they have to cast a skinny, shortish man as Wilbur. You have to have the physical contrast between Edna and Wilbur to have the correct impact. Otherwise, most of the Wilbur jokes in "Timeless To Me" come off as the pot calling the kettle black.

Hanna, do NOT lecture a professional writer (who knows not the difference between "then" and "than") on dramaturgical sense. That's just b.i.t.c.h.y.!

re: Harvey as Edna in Vegas

From Riedel's column today:

"Harvey Fierstein at first turned down playing Edna Turnblad in the upcoming Vegas production of "Hairspray."

But Vegas kept upping the offer until he gave in. He'll be starring in the show there for 12 weeks beginning in February.

A theater agent says Broadway headliners can get $100,000 or more a week for a stint in Vegas."

re: Harvey as Edna in Vegas

I was so happy to see Harvey, until I got to the last paragraph and my blood ran cold.

"...the original two-hour and forty-minute production will be modified to run ninety minutes, without an intermission at Luxor Las Vegas."

Why doesn't Vegas get it? This will ruin the show. I could see cutting a little bit, but basically an hour? I don't think I'll be seeing this even with La Harvey .

re: Harvey as Edna in Vegas

Margo, that number can easily occur in Vegas. The money is incredibly disposable out here. Harvey would deserve that amount if that's what was offered. If nothing else just to open the show. I won't even mention "Q" money, but for people without "marquee value" they are doing pretty good!

The LUXOR has an incredible room and will fit Hairspray suitably. The beauty of showrooms/theatres in Vegas is that they are not set-up like Broadway houses. You are not incredibly far away even if you have the last seats in the house.

It does get dry out here, to hit upon someones concern, but not so much in the Winter, early Spring.

I just would hate to think of Harvey damaging those golden chords.
