Has anyone seen "The Whipping Man"?
#1Has anyone seen "The Whipping Man"?
Posted: 1/17/11 at 12:20pmI saw the premiere production several years ago and thought it was one of the most exciting and stimulating American plays to come along in a while. I'm very excited for the New York premiere. Andre Braugher is seemingly perfectly cast in the lead role. Has anyone seen it yet? Thoughts?

Posted: 1/17/11 at 3:44pmI saw the play on Friday and loved it! The second act absolutely flew by. I really appreciated the humor they brought to the subject matter. There were audible reactions throughout, especially that first scene! You should definitely check out this production. Very well cast and produced (the set was cool too)!

I saw this production tonight (a surprise ticket from my boss at the last minute) and loved every minute of it! We both said the exact same thing when it was over, that we wanted to see more! I found the subject matter very compelling and was a topic that I had never heard of before. All three actors are perfectly cast, and Andre Braugher gives a masterful performance.
This show is not to be missed! Definitely check it out!

Posted: 1/27/11 at 11:59pmI saw it two weeks ago and loved it. The set roped me in even before the show started and then the curtain rose and I was engulfed for the full two hours and a little bit! Great acting, interesting story! I would definitely recommend it!

I would call it a creditible effort. It has interesting ideas, and is well acted and staged. The seder scene was nicely done.
The problem, and it's a major one, and unfortunately, seemingly endemic to plays nowadays, is that too much of the action is predicated on offstage events, and too much time is spent talking about them. This saps the play of both drama and energy.
I think the author has talent, and I enjoyed his play at the Summer Play Festival, "Tio Pepe."
